I've got the same exact problem. Just recently, took her to Texas on a Uhaul flatbed and when I was unloading her after the trip home this noise immediately started to occur. I just rebuilt my tranny and have amsoil in it, not to mention just changing diff and tcase fluids with Diaqueen this morning (but it didn't solve the whine). My bets on the wheel bearings, gonna try and figure it out tomorrow.

I have the same crap!!!! Its a faint wavy type howl noise between 50-60 mph only and resonates through the chassis . And occurs during keeping cruise or slightly decel. Goes away during acceleration.

I figured out sort of what it is. I used to think its the transfer case but it is not! The stupid sound at most times sounds like its coming from the front tcase area but its actually the back! I believe it is the rear diff. Possibly a chipped a tooth.

My car started doing it after I had 5 people in my car combined weight of 700+ lbs. (yes they were all big guys) I launched the car and it was one of those humid foggy nights with slightly moist road surface and had a lot of wheel hop for the first time. Well if not being an idiot for launching with all that weight, I for some reason kept on it thinking it will hook. Well it didnt and the noise started from that point on. Been with me for a little over a year now.

I'm starting to think it's the rear diff too, gonna make sure tomorrow. Eitherway, tcase and rear diff are both pretty expensive.

Found out today that it was indeed my rear diff. Gonna have TRE rebuild it though!

Mine's making the same noise, pretty sure it's the rear diff as well. It happened after I shifted pretty hard from 1st up through 5th gear(loud bang from the rear diff when engaging) a few thousand miles ago, and regularly happens when cruising in 5th and 6th under very light load. I have almost 53k on the car now, this happened around 45k ish. I've had the car since it had 12k miles on it, making the same power the whole time(340 whp), and daily driven. The car has seen plenty of hard shifting, I think that may be the cause IMO. Can anybody confirm this? Be honest, if someone comes in here and says they "rarely get on it" and it's making this same exact noise I'd be a bit skeptical since the rear diff being slammed over and over again seems to be a likely cause for an issue like this.

That being said, is the best fix for this is a rebuilt diff(as opposed to fluid changes)? If so does anybody think it's worth it to upgrade to the TRE or Shep 1.5 way/max lock?

Do you know what actually broke inside? Is it the LSD or maybe chipped gear tooth?

having the same problem when i hit 58 to 60 mph as well,i change the fluids normally and have aluminum bushings and poly engine mount. I did a change this weekend and noticed oil leaking from somewhere on the side of the read diff, so im gonna power wash it off and watch it for a week or so and hope its nothing or ill be doing a rebuild too

Hey Guys,

The video that was posted in this thread belonged to me and the noise turned out to be my blown transfer case. I had it rebuilt with a Shep Stage 2. All noises went away for about 3 months but now I'm getting a slight humming noise between 70 and 80 mph on decel. Once I let off the gas, the noise happens. When I shift into neutral, noise will go completely away. Noise also goes completely away once I go below 70 mph.

Update for me: I had it sent to TRE for their top rebuild, had to have the ring and pinion bearings replaced in the process as well. Got it back and well.... the dif feels great but the whine is still there --only about half as bad. I remember it being so loud on the highway that I couldn't hear the radio over it, but not I can drown it out almost entirely;nonetheless, it's still there and I'm definetly not in a good mood

T-case checked out fine. I was testing it tonight, swerving around to see if a wheel bearing might be bad and I found something interesting. The pitch is speed dependent, regardless of whether its in a gear or in neutral. I rolled up and down a few hills and sure enough it progressively got louder down the hill while it became lighter on the way down. I tested this in neutral on a straight and the outcome was the same, it simply toned down as I slowed down. I wish someone could diagnose this.
