Is reliability a possibility?
They were aware of the evos MLS gasket. I'm not sure how that would affect their cut though.
The only issue I have with paying another shop 800-1000 is that if there is an issue with the block, then I am throwing that money away. To r&r and engine is 1500. I see what you're saying about it being alot cheaper, but if there is any chance of this not going back together right again, I'd rather just pull the trigger.
What would you guys do? upgrade the block or try to fix it knowing that the only issue left is a deficiency in the block itself?

I would definately at least make sure the block is straight, Blocks don't warp often, but at this point you don't want to leave any possibility out. Having a good shop diagnose the problem and fix it themselves isn't a bad idea either. that way, if it fails again its back on them and not you. Don't give up
