Rattling noise after cold start?

I have a mostly stock 9 that makes a pretty loud rattling sound from the engine when I start it up in the morning. It goes away after it warms up though. I have 55k miles and I know it's about time for a new timing belt. Any ideas?

Kind of like some pieces of metal shaking inside a can. When I start the engine it's fine then after a few sec it starts making the noise then after maybe 3 min it stops. And what's weird is it makes noise in the morning but not when I get off work. The only difference is that I park on an incline at home.

I have the same exact issue.

On a cold start, I get this strange rattling noise that sounds like its coming from the front of the vehicle but from underneath. It starts about 10 seconds after the start and I notice that my boost gauge goes from -17 vac to only -10 vac. It'll sit there while the noise is happening and about a minute and half goes by and the noise will start to go away and my boost gauge will also lower back down to -17 vac again. It's almost like there is some sort of leak somewhere that gets sealed up once the car runs for a small amount of time... very strange. I took a video of the noise but I'm waiting for youtube to process it.

If the sound is coming from the belts area, then it have to be the timing belt. It can also be the other belts but most problem are the timing belt. The timing belt tend to rub against a metal plate. Just replace the timing belt and you should be fine. Also search for "engine noise" or "cluster noise" for more sources.

It's strange. I parked on the street last night so I would be on level ground and in the morning it didn't make the sound. Either way I think it's coming from the timing belt and I'm due to replace it anyway.

I don't think its a belt problem. Im thinking its a clutch/tranny problem. Maybe a throw out bearing because the noise goes away when the clutch is pressed but comes back when the clutch is depressed.

it could be that but why would it go away and only happens at certain times? I'm gonna check it anyway.

Did you figure it out? All my searches have turned up timing belt noises- it seems to be a "normal" issue on IX's. Mine is an VIII, but has the same problem. I had my timing belt replaced at 60k and am now at 71 and just noticed the noise. I'm wondering if it was installed/tensioned incorrectly.

Here's a LONG thread to support my previous post (consensus= timing belt):
