checking the head on a blown motor

hi guys,

i recently blew the rod out of my engine and that was obvious due to running too lead. I'm now curious, how do i check if i can salvage the head?

p.s when i turn the key it doesnt crank , just a tick and thats it
also the rod flew out of the bottom of the block.

take the head to a machine shop they should be able to tell you if its good or not..chances are you might have some damage components but the head could possibly be fixed

Of course the car won't start or turn over if you threw a rod for gods sake, the crank is probably seized and the rotating assembly shot to hell.

If you totally grenaded the thing you have a 50/50 chance that the head is alright. You have to take the valve cover off, remove the timing belt and components, unbolt the intake manifold and raise the head. There are quite a few writeups on how to do this.

or take out the spark plugs, if one is mashed up then chances are your head is the same way. fastest way to tell is by doing that. then from there on remove the head and have a machine shop inspect it!

Drain the oil, inspect it for shavings.. The turbo will need flushed / inspected along with the oil cooler, turbo feed line, and anything oil hits pretty much. Not a fun job and not very pocket friendly either. I think i seen your block if you're friends with Chris / Eisen7.
