signs of a clutch going bad?

I was driving on the highway the other day and went to go pass someone, and as soon as the car hit boost, it spiked up about 1000 rpms and went nowhere, then it caught and continued to accelerate. It does this in every gear when I really get on it. stock clutch, ~51,000 miles, torque probably 310 or 320 for the last 30,000 miles. Is this a sign that my stock clutch is going bad?

Also, if it is going bad, I was looking at the Exedy clutches for a replacement, which would be more ideal, stage 2 single, or the hd twin? I have read nothing but amazing things about the twins from exedy, but I'm not sure if i need it for an every day non dragged car. I maybe go to the dragstrip once a year, if that. It definitely a street car.

Thanks!

Yep clutch is going. Exedy Stage 2 will be fine if you keep the same power level. If you are planning on going over 400 lbs of torque than go with the Twin Disc.

may as well do the exedy twin hd it will last you another 50k miles at your power level. if the clutch is bad put the car in 5th gear and floor it, if the rpm's shoot up and you go nowhere then clutch is slipping! i dont know if you plan on running more power in the future, if not then single will be ok also.

to me it sounds like its slipping since you already described the symptoms.

^^ listen to tscompusa, the 5th gear trick is the sure way to test your clutch.

sounds like its def going. if thats the case I say go twin while you in there so it will last a while, and hold any further upgrades you may decide to do. clutches on the evo are a pita, so might as well go big while your doing it so you dont have to do it twice. just my .02. gl

yeah this was doing the 5th gear test, i would floor it around 3k rpms, and as soon as any boost built up, it would jump up to 4000-4200 and go nowhere, then it would catch and accelerate, after a huge delay obviously, this is how i first found out, then i tried accelerating in other gears, and the same thing, except in the more powerful ones it just doesnt grab at all, or if it does it wont be until 5000-6000 rpms
good excuse to upgrade clutch/flywheel though

Do you know where I can get powerful gears?

if you arent aiming for 400whp, my vote is exede twin SD. alot easier clutch to live with then the HD and still plenty for most evos.

ACT has got nothing on Exedy clutches. Buy the right clutch the first time Exedy twin HD.

Kind of a offtopic question but when a clutch is slipping, what exactly is wrong with the clutch; Is the friction material completely worn off the disc or is it something else? Obviously I'm referring to a clutch that has a lot of miles like the OP's not a overpowered clutch.

clutch disc gets worn down and then eventually will destroy the flywheel surface if you keep driving with it slipping.

you were correct.
