Output shaft has a lot of play, normal?

So the weather cleared up and I finally got around to removing the axles, and the small axle that connects the transmission to the transfer case from the drivers side (I am removing the transmission so I can figure out what the crazy noise is.) When I removed the transfer case from the transmission, I went and turned the output shaft has a lot of play. I'm guessing it's the output shaft. It's hollow, center shaft spins opposite. I mean a lot of play. Is that normal? Or the noise that sounds like a shot bearing the output shaft bearing that is blown and causing the play?

I noticed something similar on my mirage evo, when I turned it counter clockwise and then clockwise (or vice versa) there was quite a bit of play but it drove fine with no noises.

Perhaps it is something else? Just a guess mate.

thanks for the info. for something as vital as that I would expect to to have very little to no play. anyone else chime in?

I had an exedy 6 puck in with the first transmission. now an exedy oem with this one. I used the tob from the kit not from mitsu so I'm hoping it's that but here is the noise:

Do you mean radial play, like you can wiggle the shaft around, or do you mean or do you mean spinning one direction, then the other theres lash?

what do you mean by lash?

I mean it moves left to right, and up to down. you can wiggle it around.

should it has any play whatsoever?

Ok so I was doing some research and I think I asked the right question for the wrong part.

This is what has a lot of play. Center diff or Front diff?

You are right, the "inner" one will wiggle around easily. It will be get "adjusted and Fixed" by the transfer Part it snaps in.
The outer one should have much less play in it.

Small Edit:

Inner means the one with smaller diameter
Outer means the one with bigger diameter ( and not protruding the case )

I looked into your video and have a few opinions:

First, the Transmission Output shafts, Centre Diff, Front Diff, Transfer, and the Output Gears inside the Transmission for 3rd and 4th Gear will ALWAYS rotating when the car moves. So, when you use the clutch, they still rotate and are attached to the wheels. ( so the noise shoul not change at all )

So,you can assume that no bearing / Gears in these regions will have an problem
So, in conclusion, the Problem should be the Input shaft and all surrounding things like 1/2 nd and 5th / rev Gears, Bearings input shaft , clutch and so on.
Also , since the syncro sleeves will be rotating always, its possible that there is anything for the sleves 1/2 or and 5 /rev ( but doesnt sound that way )

There is an possible chance that after an clutch change there was an major misalignment so the Input shaft has an Problem.

thank you german_evoVII. that was super informative and helpful.

I will take it as good news since new diffs are pricey. I will first look at the input shaft bearing and see if it's shot. It shouldn't have and play whatsoever correct?

UPDATE:

The transmission finally wiggled it's way out of the engine bay. That was a pain in my ***.
The center diff is how everyone described with the center part having a little bit of play but the outside pretty solid. The diff spins fairly easy but I can feel something kind of skipping, possibly just the teeth with another gear. Fells normal unless someone else chimes in.

The input shaft however does not spin at all! The transmission was left in neutral before I removed it. I'm guessing this isn't normal?

I am debating on pulling it apart myself or letting a transmission shop figure it out and rebuild it. More updates soon!

pull it apart and check the bearings out it's not that hard and is a great learning point. Worst case you can take it too a shop and let them rebuild it if it ends up being too much for you.
