Almost 80% of the Evo's have this problem you need a clutch or tranny rebuild.

what is the side effect of not rebuilding and just dealing with the grinding for a long time? My eclipse would grind into 3rd and i just kept on driving it like that for like a year

First try to adjust the clutch pedal to disengage the clutch more in between the shift. Also change tranny fluid to bg syncroshift 2 or try the redline mixture of mtl and mt90.
If not pull the tranny replace the clutch and do a basic rebuild. Downsides to grinding its going to cause more wear

Mine is starting to grind in 5th higher in the RPM. I'm guessing the syncros are going out. I am going to try changing out the fuilds, hopefully thats helps for awhile.

Mine did the same in 3rd... I would baby it and do an extra rev to avoid the grind. Eventually my 2nd gear started to do the same, so I had it rebuilt. My advice would be:

1. Adjust the clutch to engage higher, flush & replace fluids, bleed clutch line.
2. When that doesn't work, have it rebuilt & do the clutch, flywheel, throw out bearing, lines, etc, all at once to save money on labor.

FYI - the more you grind it, the better chance of having to replace a gear or 2, which will get expensive fast.

mine does it in 3rd and 5th. the 03 VIII's tranny has a crappy 5th gear. they remade them in 04 models so they are better. Im going to be getting my stuff done here soon.

My trans is just notchy as hell, feels like its grinding but isn't. I'm gonna try a few things but i'm also gonna adjust my clutch because if its not pressed all the way sometimes it will grind.

Check the condition of your motor mounts. Bad ones can cause movement that makes shifting a problem. Also check your shifter bushings.

The shifter bushings are going to be my first step. I'm assuming the mounts are fine since it only has 42k, but its atleast worth a check.
