Before and After 272 CAMS Impressions

Can any one chime in and give a good before and after impression of how cams make the butt dyno feel over stock cams. I have driven evos with stock cams but never with aftermarket cams installed. I just bought a evo 8 with kelford 272 and was just wondering what to expect/look forward to.

Thanks

Cams really wake the car up, cant make good powah without them. Since you already have the Kelfords no need to change unless you turn it into a drag car.

to be honest i wish i wouldve left the stock cams in my car, i dont feel as though the $750 i spent on the camshafts+install was worth it, dont forget to add in the $300 for a tune to go with it. i would have much rather saved that money and put it towards a turbo. so i couldve saved the $1050 for my next big mod.

It definitely does get expensive if you have a shop take car of it. I spent $300 on a slightly used set of hks 272's and installed/tuned myself, IMO probably the best bang for the buck on the stock turbo.

To answer the op question...my hks' are definitely not as agressive as the kelfords, but I noticed a huge difference in the rpm band above 5k. Even at 25psi, the stock turbo would fall off after 5-5.5k or so and the car just felt out of power. When I installed the cams, the pull I felt up to 5k, continued all the way to redline. No, its not going to make the car pull up top like a bigger turbo would, but the car definitely wakes up big time in the upper rpms. You also mentioned you were using the car for road racing. I do the same and I think it creates a big difference since you spend the majority of your time above 4k rpm. Worth every penny in my opinion.

On an VIII, HKS 272's or 280's are completely worth it... good 20-30whp gain to be had there and no real loss in torque.

On the IX, the stock cams are very similar to HKS 272's s there's no real need to upgrade unless you're really moving the torque curve to the right with a big turbo (FP Black or bigger).

Any IX cams that will make a real difference in the top end will do so at the expense of the bottom end, so take that into consideration.

Please note I have a 8 but I think this thread will be very informative for people wanting to upgrade cams. Also please keep in mind that we are not talking about any brand in particular.

Are the HKS's worth it without adjustable gears?

i installed kelfords 272/272 this past summer, there amazing, great power and awesome idle...im not an avid track guy or anything but i'll definitely throw down at a light or on the freeway lol...if you want more power and can afford it, (cams/install only about 800 all together) i'd do it and if i had to i would do it again

I'm gonna stick with stock cams and see what I can do with em on e-85. You guys might wanna add springs and retainers price too.

I think that's a good question 88 pathy but if ur putting cams aren't you also worried about exhaust. Just take it to someone who will look over that! I really like the input of this thread. Let's keep this going. Any one else have before and after impressions of their cams.
