sorry to tell you this but no fluid will change this grind. The sleeve and gears in the tranny in the Evo are failing. I just rebuilt my tranny and found all 3 sleeves and 2nd,3rd,4th,and 5th gears were worn. Not the actual gear teeth but the teeth that line up to the synchro hub (which is part of the whole gear).

I am not talking about gear grinding, like when your syncros are severely worn or damaged. I don't think I have ever experienced that type of gear shift grinding with my EVO and it now has almost 21K. I had a intermitent slight grind early on but the SS clutch line seemed to help with that.
What I am experiencing only happens under extreme load and fast shifting (race conditions). It's like the linkage binds and it just will not go into gear, its like there is a lock out on the shift linkage. Like the ones that keep you from going into reverse from fifth gear, and it doesn't happen every time. It doesn't quite seem like a syncro issue? But I have limited experience in these areas so, I am very open to ideas/opinions.
I have noticed this problem since the car was practically brand new, if that means anything. I have also seen several people describing the exact same thing, it didn't seem like a lubrication issue, but you never know.

Still think it's worn tranny parts?

BTW did you get your money back?

I've been running Redline MT90 in the tranny and 75-90 front and rear diffs for awhile now and I like it much better than the stock fluids. Everything feels great. No binding or grinding shifting at any rpm.

Everything I've done so far has only made the shifting better but I never had any problems to begin with so...

SS clutch line, restrictor removed, solid bushings, Kartboy short shifter, heavy 340 gram Razo RA96 shift knob and Redline. Each has made a noticable improvement. Shifting just keeps getting better for me.

Only thing I plan on changing is to use Redline 75-90 shockproof in the front diff next time I change it.

I still didn't get anything back from that @ssh@le. The same thing was happening with my tranny. The synchros were ok, not worn. It was the synchro sleeve and gears.

i have the same "lock out" from 2nd gear in the mornings when its cold...after the car is warmed up... it goes away... but this is a really slow, mellow 1-2 shift not quick at all.

Silver Surfer has described my problem exaclty. The second gear block out like when you try to go into reverse and this happens only at high rpm. I think this could be the syncromesh not catching up quick enough. I could imagine an oil with more fiction may help.

I have it too. Only under high load and high RPM. In other words when I'm racing someone. Its only second gear and shifts great under normal conditions.
Its a real PITA. The thing is sometimes its fine other times its not. I have found if I really focus on my 1-2 shift there are no problems. I lift just a hair befor redline, clutch to the floor then shift. I think sometimes I try to shift to quik or before the clutch hits the floorboard. That seems to be when I have the most problems. BTW I have 25k and the stock clutch.

It happens to everyone. Same here too. Could be that 1st to 2nd have 3 syncros (not sure) and that they have to all line up. Don't know.

It's not the fluid although the fluid may help. Get the underhood bushing. I got the underhood bushings and the car is still on stock fluids. Shifter is better and 1st to 2nd shift got better. Install the short shifter. Things went even better. I think the shifter bushing is the culprit. The stock ones are too loost and under heat it will be worst.

Yea, but my problem is only when the car is cold straight out of the garage, not racing...

Thanks everyone!
I have changed the fluid to Motul MaxGear soon after I started this thread and the problem went away. I guess the MT-90 was too thin??

I have the 2 pc and 8 pc metal bushings
I have Syncromesh in the tranny
I have Redline 75 w/90 ns w/friction mod in the diff
I have redline "light" shockproof in the transfer case

Try the GM Syncroshift... it is a TSB fix (for notchy shifting) per Mitsubishi for a reason. You can get it at most Mitsubishi dealerships at the parts counter, but you will pay more than at the GM parts counter. I've run it, and now run the Pennzoil Syncromesh (is the same fluid, but cheaper), with great results. Shifts like butter as they say. If you problem is what superz is describing, no fluid is going to help.
