Transmission Modification???

So i got my transmission out last night worked from 8 am til 1:30 am LOL but i finally got it out, my question is 5th gear is annoying... at 80 mph im at 4k rpms i want to lower that a little bit. Where would i buy the 2 gears that i need, who sells them? i know hks sells the shorter 5th gear for drag racing but where can i find a longer gear... +1 tooth on both gears should be enough to do it.

i have no idea i didnt think of that. i guess that could work. i would think its longer cause the 6th gear i believe goes up to 200 or so? im not 100% sure though. I just need something to get my revs down a little bit as i do a LOT of highway driving. i dont mind the way it is now but i would prefer a longer gear. top speed doesnt matter either im not looking to do 200 lol

an mr six speed will give you + ~2/3mph at 4krpms, which is nothing. Remove the wing, get oversized tires and make sure toe is 0 all round. A TUNE specific for highway commuting will go a long way to save fuel, more than another gear in the middle of your driveline..

A longer final drive will turn your pocket rocket into a bus...

HKS makes a longer final drive. I have it on my Evo and love it. Defiantly over kill to get highway rpm’s down.

mitsi makes and sells a 4.111 final drive too, about $600USD for both the drive wheel and output shaft

RSMike, mitsi? Are you referring to Mitsubishi them selfs? Do they really make an OEM 4.11 final drive?

yup, Mitsi = Mitsubishi.

Parts numbers:

MD770339 - drop gear (on the centre diff) (74 teeth)
MD748306 - output shaft (18 teeth)

74 / 18 = 4.111

Jackstransmissions sell them, i just got a confirmation email this week.
They come out of 1996+ ec5a/ec5w Legnum/Galant VR4 with 2.5litre twin turbo v6 5speed cars.
I have one of those gearboxes in my garage and i can confirm 100% that it's 4.111 final drive

ch1215g- On TeamRip's site, the chart on the bottom tells you what to expect for speed in each gear at 7,000rpm with the different final drives and different VIII or IX gearing.

Assuming you're running a stock Evo 8 drive-train with similar size as stock wheels, you will go by the row on the left that says "Evo 8 - Stock 4.53". If you want to change the final drive to 4.11, you'll have to look in the appropriate row.

I'm not sure if anything else has to be ordered though. I don't know if the speedo will read correctly or not after a final drive change. I'm still stock but maybe RSMike can comment on that.

i was thinking about this too, but i dont make nearly enough power for 4.11 gearing. i recently got my trans rebuilt, had the option to change things up for a longer 5th gear... decided to leave it and live with it
