Which type of muffler dampens sound more, packed type or baffle type?

As above, has anyone done a good comparison of packed vs baffled type mufflers?
I am guessing baffled types would have slightly less flow, however for the power level I am after I am more concerned with noise level than performance. It will be a 3" system, I am sure it would flow more than factory.

Okay so no replies. lol
Well thanks to a mate here in NZ for letting me view his Magnaflow muffler, I picked 2 REP packed mufflers, same design but much cheaper.

My car now has a full 3" exhaust and it sounds just like a stock evo (if not quieter) with 2 of these mufflers, but it has alot more flow.
I initially had a 2.25" exhaust with 2 bullet shaped mufflers and it is now quieter at idle and under full load.
The inside consists of an S-bend connecting the inlet and outlet not offset chambers, so flow is continuous.
Hope this helps anyone else looking for mufflers to quieten noise down, but still wanting flow.
Cheers, Martin.

you copied me Martin!
I love the sound of my magnaflow muffler in the back, but i was too lazy to loop it back around like you did, so i just dumped it out the rear left hand side
I definitely think the packed mufflers work better than the baffled, as proven with my old setup.
You should look at JB's thread about his 3.5" magnaflow... no loss up to like 650whp then it hits a wall

I will post up a vid later, car is off the road at the moment. Chucking in kelford tx264s and doing all belts and tensioners and powder coating the rocker cover. Cant wait to have it running again.
These are REP mufflers not magnaflow mufflers, but the design is the same.

I should have weighed the system, but being honest the whole lot wasnt that heavy.

I have a Magnaflow muffler and a Magnaflow high flow cat. My car is pretty quiet. My Mustang is quieter with the Magnaflow Mufflers (packed) that with the Mac mufflers (baffled) I took off a few years ago.

Thanks for the pic.
I thought of going this route a long time ago, but i wanted the exhaust tip to exit in thestd evo 8/9 position.....
however, i may change my mind.....only because i could shoe-horn more muffler = more silencing.
what sucks for me, i recently aquired a jdm rear bumper which really cuts down (~3-4" / 75-100mm) of real estate to geek in a muffler....maybe need to sell the rear bumper...
yeah, it does add more weight + 2 more bends if you were originally going for a clean install vs. jdm look.

yeah it would be nice to have it coming out the right side, but i'm really not fussed on looks (it's a mirage!)
I'm not sure how much real estate the evo guys have at the back there, but this setup definitely works well for muffling. The Magnaflow i've got is awesome, and it made more power over my louder setup
Cheers, Mike

Assuming the Evolution cars have enough space to do the across type layout would it be possible to run the exhaust down the other side of the tailshaft Evo 6 style and have the mufflers outlet in the std position ?
I really like the idea of a 3" system thats really quiet - and flows .
Cheers A .
