FP Black Shaft Play
Installed In October 2010
Blown 3 weeks later
Sent to FP November 2010
Just received turbo Feb 14th 2011
Just installed turbo March 8th 2011
The turbo was installed step by step...running the high pressure oil line off the filter housing also...using the brad penn oil they suggested...I havent even let the turbo reach boost yet because I am trying to "break it in" for 500 miles. I decided to go over my car today to make sure I didnt miss anything and something told me to check the turbo shaft...Sure enough the shaft seems to be bouncing around in the housing...Now I know there should be a normal amount of shaft play but damn...If this turbo blows I am going to go crazy. My car was down for too long for something to go wrong again. Is there anyone in the Southern New Jersey area that could tell me if my turbo is bad?

I literally waited patiently for FP and their bs for months to warranty the turbo and send it out...thinking my car gonna be ready for the spring...I am really hoping that its just normal play because i refuse to take that turbo off myself again....Old off..Black on...Black off...old on...old off...Black on..........I like working on my own **** but that would just be ridiculous.

My red made it a little over 50,000mi. then grenaded. Not worth rebuilding at that point. It did not smoke or give me any signs before going. I was not using an approved oil or the upgraded line though. I had purchased the turbo when they first came out and the recommended list/current upgraded line was not availible.

I inspected the turbo before I installed it and everything was good...I am using the Brad Penn oil that I drove way out of my way to go get that they suggested...I am hoping everything is good...I planned to put my meth kit on end of this month when i have time to get to a shop...i will baby it and try not to drive it till then. hopefully one of the shop pros can tell me if it is still good.

Some up/down play is normal, though I don't think the wheels should touch the housings. It's the in/out that's a big problem which implies the thrust bearing is toast. There should be very little in/out.
As for turbos blowing up, you'll find examples of every single turbo made that has blown up. Granted, some more than others, but it still can happen to any turbo.
