Should I go C.O.P or NOT?

hey guys..Had a question.. I been searching quite a bit on SparkTech Cop and Spoolin COP..I am curious about if I need one or if i should get one.. All i hear is great comments on them.. The smoother drivability and what not. Some vendors say not to get one some say to get one. Just wondering your honest opinions on them.. Im at 385 hp right now.. My mods are CBRD BBK full ported turbo, Injen upper and lower intercooler piping, AMS front mount, 950CC FIC injectors. Ive just recently purchased ARP headstuds, supertech valve springs and retainers and im debating on a set of cams, hopefully should go back for a retune and make over 400+.. Also my car is a evo IX.. So Should i get one?? Which ones do you guys recommend? the pros and cons? and which model CDI or non CDI (not even sure what that means please enlighten me)... thanks

Its not really needed till i higher hp range. Say around 550 to 600 hp would be a good point to get it

In our opinion the need for a ignition (CDI or non) is dictated by your cars performance with proper plugs (Iridiums), gapped properly, etc.

Some cars have proven to have weak packs/wires and generally if you are going to replace them then you can upgrade.

Cheers

I havent really seen much gains on a 400hp car with a COP.. Its normally needed when your running high enough boost that you are blowing out the spark and cant gap the plugs any tighter.. RPM range isnt the deciding factor if you need a COP..

CDI COP actually works when its needed.. NON CDI i have seen more on cars as dress up items than functional.. a COP needs an MW Cdi box to really see the advantages.. Every car in my signature has run a Buschur COP and i Have seen 35whp back to back to back testing on a 40psi 700hp evo.. We made 735whp on a older cast wheel 67mm evo with just COP addition.. After i saw that i was a believer..

from my experience it varies.

stock can handle A LOT of power and an upgrade isnt really necessary till you start to go over 600ish for most setups. i helped a buddy with an fp black install and all supporting mods running stock coils, fuel rail, press reg etc and he managed 530ish hp at 30 psi on E85 with out one hiccup.

but then again i was having spark issue at 25psi on a 35r so i upgraded to a spark tech non cdi which fixed my problems.

my advice would be to stick with your stock coils until you need a COP. go get your tune and if you have spark issue which cant be fixed with the basics (re-gapping, fresh plugs etc etc) then start looking for a non cdi.

if you want to run a cdi kit i believe you need a stand alone ecu. non cdi will work with stock ecu.

i dont know what started that rumor but its incorrect.. The bastard stock ecu evo in my signature was running BR COP and derek our tuner has a BR COP on his as well making 600+.. NO ISSUES..

im waiting to find a few minutes to put my sparktech non cdi on my car. its just a basic bolt on setup, but even on fresh plugs the low down around town is not very smooth, so i will report back on any changes.

thanks guys for the input ...i know its for higher horsepower evos but I still hear even on lower horsepower they help making our evos run smoother but just needed more input on the mid 400hp cars with the COP... Anymore input ??

I don't have a lot of input, since I literally installed mine this afternoon, (410ish whp at 26 psi a few mods ago), but it definitely smoothens out the power delivery. That is very apparent. Make more power, get better mileage, etc.......I'll have to get back to you on that. I didn't really get a chance to open it up during my test drive to make sure there were no hiccups, but I anticipate that I'll see the real benefits of the kit when I switch to E85 and dial up the boost to 30+ psi in the next few weeks.
