Oddball Troubleshooting Q&A

Ironically this is my first post and I've never really had a reason to start one until now. I've got a bone stock 2004 RS. I've got a couple small issues that I think are interrelated somehow.

• car used to have a factory rev limit right around 7100rpm (I've accidentally hit it twice in 3rd gear) now there IS NO rev limiter. Again, on accident, I saw almost 7500 rpm in 4th gear with no interruption.

• the car also has an occasional rough idle (could be a small vacuum leak, but all associated lines are at least intact to the EGR, FPR, intake manifold, etc.) The idle never hunts, the car never stalls, but I can liken it to a mild cam lope.

• most noticeably upon closing the throttle while driving, I can hear what sounds like a relay or solenoid "click" right before the throttle closes, probably 1/8th to 1/4 throttle position at most. This is something I've never noticed until about 6 months or so ago, somewhat in conjunction with the idle issues.

• no check engine light or new codes. The car still seems to pull without hesitation and has no major driveability issues other than the occasional rough idle.

I'm scratching my head at this point because I don't know where to start or what to look for. Never had anything like this happen before!

I don't rev my Evo very high. But if you are winding it to "almost 7500 RPM", then you are only almost, but not quite reaching the factory Rev limit, which if I am not mistaken is set at exactly 7500 RPM, not less.

Interesting. It's not my intention to rev it that high, since I've got stock everything. I just wasn't paying enough attention to the tach at the time and based on the two other times I just tapped the rev limiter the tach was at an indicated 7,100 rpm. That issue must just be a discrepancy with the tach accuracy?
