AEM BEWARE!!!, Tuners please look, AEM vs Motech vs Microtech
I would not be scared to use any of the systems mentioned.....and even ones not mentioned. F you are familar with standalone tuning and/or enigne management in general (I mean more than a casual acquaintance with it), then you will easily be able to figure out any of your engine management options and get it to work well. uif you are a newbie to it, you are probably best off finding a local tuner who you can sit down with, disuss your options, and allow him to tune it for you. If you are interested in learning the ropes of the particular system you end up getting, most good tuners can work with you in helping you learn the ins and outs of that particular setup.
Just to keep you guys in the loop, this was posted on the AEM EMS forum this morning regarding the ignition issues on the EVO box.

The 30-1313 EVO-8 ECU has been on hold since before Christmas. We had to research and verify a couple of customer problems with the ignition at high boost (+20psi) levels. We have completed the investigation and identified a potential problem with the ignition driver on the early shipments of the EVO-8 ECU's. This problem has only been identified cars running higher than normal boost (+20psi or more) while retaining the factory ignition coils. This problem does not affect those with aftermarket CDI's and coils nor those that intend to run stock levels of boost.
This problem only applies to the 30-1313 EVO-8 EMS Serial Numbers 001 through 015.
30-1313 ECU's with serial number 16 and higher are not effected by this issue nor are any of the 30-1313U ECU's (EVO-8 with internal UEGO).
If you have a 30-1313 ECU S/N 001 through 015 and are experiencing an ignition problem at high boost or forsee high boost in the future, then you should contact the AEM EMS tech line at (800) 423-0046 to get an RMA number so you can send your unit back for the update. We will modify and return all ECU's on the same day that they are recieved.
As of now, all 1313 and 1313U ECU's at AEM have been modified and the shipping hold has been removed. There has been much testing in the last 2 weeks and we have many 500+ hp pulls on the fix and life seems to be good again....
Thanks for sticking with us and giving us a chance to take care of it.

we have the 1313u serial number 003 installed on a customers car. we have had ZERO issues with the car other than the known startup issue. thats the fault of the sensors in the car, not the ems. the evo just takes about 4 cranks before it sync's. once it syncs it fires right up, everytime with no problems.
if you have problems with drivability/power its either the tuner or something mechanical with the car. i have done at least 10 cars on the ems and all of them drive like they had the stock ecu in them. yes even our 550+hp civic street car with some big cams idles like a normal civic and gets 25mpg.

What about Haltech? Pacific Performance in Ft. Lauderdale did an Evo 8 with a plug & play unit. Rumours are they made 400+ whp with upgraded turbo kit (done by them) & the Haltech.
haltech is a good unit, but the customer base is so small for the pnp applications so it would be harder to find local tuner familar with haltech. like we said before, as far as standalones go, they are only as good as the person tuning it
imo, the BEST way to tune a car is to find someone you can trust to tune your car and use what they know best.

It is a design built into the AEM as a safety device to syncronize all the inputs. Making sure everything is working properly and that all the inputs are continuitive.
It is the best unit out for the EVO and many others IMHO.
THEY have been absolutely NO problems. We have installed several and all the configurations we have done have worked out without a hitch from the beginning.
