I feel like I need to write an FAQ.
The problem is that the 1st/2nd gears aren't the ones that fail. 3rd/4th are the ones that go. In my case it was the collar between 3rd/4th after a couple days of road racing.

I like my 6spd, but would have avoided the MR if I knew I was going to race. Shifting into 5th before the trap kinda blows. I have no input on tracking though.

I went from a 6-speed to a built 5-speed. 6-speed feels better for daily driving hands-down. The 5-speed is proven for every type of competition though. So really depends where your priorities lie. I thought losing the extra gear would make highway duty way worse but really it doesn't. Only a few hundred RPMs. If you do a lot of highway and go with a 5-speed, start with an VIII 5-speed and not a IX. 5th was taller in the VIII.

If your 6-speed is messed up already, it will cost you around the same for a 5-speed housing + rebuild than for just a good 6-speed rebuilt (Shep is the only one who can make it stronger I think), just because 5-speeds are so much more common and a lot of people work on them. I don't have any regrets about the swap. Not that it was my choice that the 6-speed failed.

I'm curious to see how well these shep 6 speeds hold power. Has there been any proven results/failures yet?

Kind of a quite subject it seems.

As far as I'm aware there haven't been any failures of the new 6-spd gearsets, but they have not been out long. There are only a couple of people that have them as far as I know. John won't release crap though, so if someone wants to keep the 6-spd he can give a good idea of the power holding you can expect. I've been super impressed with the work they did on my 5-spd. It shifts beautifully.

For most people I think its convenience, it would be nice to do a 6 speed upgrade. I think the major problem people have, is sourcing out a 5 speed and making it work in MR. Its definitely pricey, and definitely something you should think about before you purchase the car. If you plan to track and make big power with your MR, you may want to keep an extra 3 grand on the side.

I'm thinking about trading my 04 STi for an EVO, so I'm used to a 6-speed. But in the Subaru world, the 5-speeds are faster in drag and circuit racing (if they're the newer stronger units) from what I've heard. I love the 6-speed for daily driving, but when you're full throttle, the gears go by so quickly, it can almost get annoying.

I Bought a 6 Speed , Since my car is a daily driver , My car currently Has 340whp , I dont think i want more than 450whp in the future

It seems the 5speed gets all the credit as the better one , But i dont plan too launch my car or do track time really , all i wanna do is highway races ,

Also i think the 6speed is more exotic lol , Hope i made the good decision
