mild misfire help
My evo lately has been misfiring intermediately at idle. when driving if im easy on it it wont misfire however about half to full throttle the car starts to misfire and hear a pop from the exhaust noise. CEL's have been coming on but for different reasons. First codes were random misfire and Crank position sensor malfunction, second time around was cylinder one misfire, i have it again but havent scanned it yet. I checked the plugs (new), resistance in the coils (in spec), resistance in the injectors, in spec. What else should I be checking or what to do next. TIA
Just because the coil resistance specs out doesn't mean the coil isn't bad. An oscilloscope is the tool you need to check the coil while in operation. The other easy way is if you get a repeat misfire code in one cyl. swap coils and see if the misfire moves too.
It did throw a crank sensor before but it didn't come up again so far. Do you think its that if first it threw a random misfire w the crank code then the second time qround it threw a cyl 1 misfire but no crank code? As far as an oscilloscope I don't have one
well so you know evilution the crank sensor is one of the main sensors the cars ecu uses to determine where the crankshaft is in timing, if the sensor is bad or is rubbing on timing belt etc, its gonna cause erratic issues, now if i remember correctly isnt the connector for the crankshaft position sensor on the passenger side of the backside of the valve cover. im assuming in the manual there is a voltage and resistance spec for the connector. you can use an ohmmeter or a voltmeter, and measure resistance of that to see if its out of spec. But yea ill say that cps is prolly causing most of your issues, check it out before it becomes so bad your car wont drive anywhere.

so i tested the Crank sensor and everything checked out. so now im running out of ideas or what to check. think its better to go to mitsu or an evo shop like ivey tune?
your next best thing is to test the spark plug wiring and also test the ignition coils, to see if there within spec, and on top of that also check the coil boots on the wires and bottom of coils for cracking in the rubber, and also to see if the coils themselves have burn marks underneath from possible arching. Now if all those check out, your next step should be to swap injectors to see if the misfire code swaps cylinders....this is the next steps id recommend to rule out your misfire code. Of course have you done the simplest step and pulled the spark plugs, checked the condition of em and the spark plug gap??
