What to build?

So im building my 4G63 out of my 03 evo 8 for school. I can't seem to make up my mind on what to do. I want a daily driver and to drag a couple times a year. I really want a quick spool pump gas car making atleast 400awhp. I dont care about rpm since i dont rev past 7k anyway, but i do care about reliability. I will be getting all supporting mods including head work. Im thinking a 4g64 2.4 with a fp black or building a 2.0 BBK. I also have a 94 supra with a DBB 67 making well over 500hp, full boost around 4.5k rpm. This is not what I want with the evo. What do you guys think would be the cheapest and best bang for the buck to get what I want? I would like to spend under 8 grand for everything. The motor runs great and has 75,000 miles on it.

I would do a 10:1 4G64 with a FP Green if you are only looking for 400whp. If you do a Black you will be making more than your Supra.

A 2.4 with a FP Black will put you WELL past your WHP goal.. Just ask the guy above me!

High compression scares me i live in NH no E85 not sure this would be a safe option. Also a 2.4 with a green wouldn't that be more likely to break things like t-case and what not? I know the 2.4 plus black is over my goal, but i wouldn't run it on kill mode. Im looking conservative i dont want a green maxed out wouldn't that shorten its life?

Now we need to get Technical

The higher compression really means nothing... You need to know the difference between static compression and dynamic compression. I can have 12:1 pistons and still run pump gas if my dynamic compression is 9.5:1. If you have 93 you shouldn't have much of a problem with a 10:1 piston, if you are on 92 then do 9.5:1.

My car for example, I have 10:1 pistons but based on my head, HG, Cams, etc... I'm almost an 11:1 motor. Do a little reseach so you understand real compression, dynamic is the only compression that matters.

Also the only thing that tends to break the t-case is launching. I have a stock t-case with no problem, just change the fluid ever 2-3 oil changes.

A Proper setup 2.4 can run a Green around 500whp and not have a problem, just make sure you are not oil starving the turbo and invest in a moddified oil pan from Buscher or the AMS pan. Also get the Kiggly HLA. Those two mods have kept my turbo together and I'm pushing it WELL beyond the limit, about 30k rpms more than it is rated for.

Also running high compression + pump has a lot to do with the bowl work in the head. I would talk to head games and get some tips if you are going to do your own head work.

TopSpeed- stop following me around to all my threads I'm posting in today. jk

btw, get rid of those horrible cams and get some S3s with Kiggly Springs!

Below is my before and after. Before I had the HKS 272/280 combo.

Your 2.4 is going to require some massive VE in higher rpms that those junk HKS 272s are not going to be able to supply. You will be choking your motor. Can't make power without the right cam selection. If you want to make some great power, take some of my advice and you will be fine. At 8,000 rpms I made 150+whp just by changing out the cams.

well considering your mods now you say full 3" turboback is that including 02 housing....id say your best bet go fp red or black or hta green, or bbk b, anyone of those turbos with the right supporting mods will get you to 400 hp dynojet, now im curious why u bought an afc when the stock ecu is capable of bein tuned without a piggy back, also why you buy a fuel rail...for the money you spent on those mods, you couldve gotten ic and piping which looks like you lack, but will need for your goal. recommendation ditch the hks 272s, im ditchin mine for some gsc s2s with there no tick lifters. theres a good 20-40whp left on the table between the two cams, now i see fuel rail n pump do u have injectors?? id say you should stop listenin to whoever gave u advice on mods up till this point. cuz ur mods are all over the place..

^ I agree, be very selective on who you listen to when it comes to modifiying your evo... It is not a honda and pick guys that have been around for awhile and have tried different mods. Not new evo owners that think they know everything... Sorry if I make some of you upset but it is the truth!

If you look through my mod list, I have some of the best parts money can buy.

Cams: GSC
UICP/LICP: ETS
Injectors: FIC/RC
BOV: Tial/Turbosmart 50mm
Springs: Kiggly
Fuel Rail: Agreed, not needed
Intercooler: Garrett ETS (3.5" at a min, I would go 4")
Clutch: Exedy (If you have the money)
Boost Controler: Hallman/AEM TruBoost
Intake Manifold: Magnus/AMS

Here is a link to my build thread, take a look: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...tor-build.html

Ok thanks guys i have read alot on here and agree with everything you guys are saying. About the mods yeah i know i bought the car with everything, but the intake and fuel pump. The guy that owned it wasnt really into cars and just bought things that looked cool i guess. I will be doing like 1000cc injectors and full ets intercooler kit. As for the cams i know I was looking into getting the gs2's. What should i do sell the short block and get a 4g64 with a 4g63 rebuild kit, also confused about balance shafts and squirters?

I was not talking about anyone specificly. I was just saying in general. I know you have met evo owners that buy their evo on a saturday and by sunday they know more than anyone else.

Ok Mikey I looked at your build, your car is insane and if i had unlimited money i would go a similar route. My evo is my winter beater/ daily driver. I dont want to spend a ton of money. This will also be my first real motor build, and I will be personally doing everything but the machine work. I like the idea of the 2.4 motor. The 2.4 and green is exactly what i was going to do, but then i was thinking maybe I should just get a red but if im going red might as well go black lol. I know what its like to have a fast car and always wanting more. I just want it reliable i dont want to have to do this again.

spending under 8k is going to be tough unless you do work yourself and get some used goodies. Some stuff you might not want to get used Of course im with Mikey and im like 2.4 all day (i have one) but you could always get a 2.3 as well dont rule that out completely. Some custom stuff has to be done to get the 4g64 working and going in a evo. Your TC and tranny will be fine so you can save money and have them built later. You stated 400whp is what you want on pump and still drag. I would really say to get the happy medium and get a fp red that way you can still put down some impressive track numbers if your aim changes later on.
