i was told thats its ok to use 6-speed trans fluid in the oem 5-speed?

Yes that is fine to use in the 5 Speed in fact TRE will recommend it.

The 6-speed fluid is actually a better fluid. And it comes in a 1 gallon can instead of a 5 gallon can (5-speed fluid). I believe the 6-speed fluid is also synthetic as the 5-speed fluid is not.
