sounds like a rod bearing, prob wanna drain your oil and check for metal flakes. can also drop oil pan. not gonna be pretty. my guess is its time to rebuild

turn the motor over without the spark plugs in. If the knock goes away then you have a bad rod bearing.

The more you drive it now, the more it will cost to fix...

Drain the oil, pull the pan and find out whether your crank is salvageable...

You can turn the motor over with the starter, which is what I think the previous poster is suggesting. If you do so with the spark plugs removed, there is no compression and the motor will spin faster than normal. HOWEVER, if you are going to do this, make sure you pull the fuse for the injectors, or you will have a major under hood mess to clean up and probably crap in your eyes, too.

The real question is whether you can reproduce the conditions that cause rod knock at RPMs and no load conditions that you can get just using the starter with no compression.... I'd not depend on this test for that reason...

If you really want to know if you have rod bearing problems, first drain the oil and look for metal particles. Next, if you find metal particles, pull the oil pan and see what you find. Pull a rod bearing cap and take a look at the bearings themselves. That's the only way you will know for sure...
