Grain of salt got it... thank you TSB, CEL..
I am not saying they aren't doing there job right I just want my car back and runnig right. I have never had a car take so long and this rental( focus) is making me crazy, I have tryed to shift so many times.. I had to have my Celica timing the hose etc. all replaced ( over 175,000 miles on it) and they were done in a day, so I was surprised it is taking so long..

KVevo8,as far as taking a while to have your car repaired,I can speak from experience,as being a tech for 15 years for another
jap manufactuer, most of the time it is a parts availabilty issue,
can't repair/replace any components without having the need parts to repair with.I have seen a transfer case take a month and a half to get.I asked my parts dept,"what the ****,are they floating a boat over to japan to get it or are they just getting around to pluck one off the assembly line"?Basicly, like MalibuJack
stated, dont be quick to judge a dealers service dept by parts availabilty issue, most techs want to get the vehicles in and out as to get paid, and the longer it takes to get the parts, the longer it takes to close out the repair order, thus to get paid.hope this helps

So I can make my car throw this code on command. and up untill today I always had to be in fifth did it in fourth during a cool down stretch on my favorite mountain road! Damn this is getting old. Does anyone know how long the battery needs to be disconnected to flush the whole ECU?

Yes, turbodan that helps..
Thank god, they said my car is ready to be picked up today, they said it was the spark plugs, so they put in a higher quaility plug. They said "octane 91 was not pure enough for the plugs that were in it." Which makes a little sense. Seems how the manual says to use 98 or higher..
But most of all the focus is gone...

I'm not sure if I have the same thing, but in the last couple of weeks, I've been getting a noise when i shift hard, from 2nd to 3rd or 3rrd to 4th. Its almost like a backfire, but its more of a clunk, like I'm going over a deep pothole, coming from the rear end. A friend with a rex tells me he hears it in his sometimes too, and it's just play in the driveline, and parts slapping together.. I'm takin it to the dealer tomorrow, but it's only happened like 3 times in the past 2-3 weeks, i doubt they'll be able to recreate it. anybody have any input?

CEL

I too threw a CEL and the sensor showed this misfire code, during a high-speed portion of a long highway drive. Cleared the code out, and was planning to take the car in for a check tomorrow.

Shiv's point in another post about spark gap may be the answer, not sure. I'm going to talk to the techs about this tomorrow. Don't know if it's psychological but I feel like I'm pulling slower all around. Will let you know what the barely qualified techs have to say about this.

Cheers,
Adam

spark gap will do nothing for the code, I tried it already. Different plugs will do nothing for the code, tried it already. This is not something a dealer will be able to fix, it has to come directly from Mitsu USA. In time they will have a tsb and fix, trust me. By the way, lower octane makes for easier lighting of the spark, higher octane burns slower.

I agree. When I do this with the tech in my car he just scratches his head. I hope mitsu corp fixes this soon... It's so annoying

I have found that the problem has only noticeably started to happen since i modified my air intake and exhaust, I originally thought it may be a spike in the turbo but my boost gague says otherwise, any ideas? maybe fuel/air mix.

There is absolutely no truth to anything said on this misfire. There is no way that the tranny could cause a misfire. I am one of the service managers for a mitsu dealership. There is also no TSB to anything related with an engine misfire on the evos.

Just talked with the Area Service Manager (10 dealerships) and he called Mitsu Corp (he's on the warranty service board) got the main engineer and called me back within 20 minutes (yes he knows my car has mods) Mitsu feels that the ECU is to "critical" on certain driving conditions and goes into a protection mode. They do know about the problem.... and are currently testing the ECU reflash solution (I think it's a lot of work for less than 3% of the EVOs sold) (Their % don't flame me!) So I guess if you don't have this problem than count yourself lucky and if you do a solution is in the wings!

If I remember the techs words right. If the ECU "sees" 6 warmup/cooldown cycles without the same problem occuring it "heals" itself and the SES/CEL goes out. This has happend only on the first time my car did this... (right before I took it into the dealer) go figure! The code was in memory though so the tech could read it.

Having the same problem here. Always happens on freeway drives. The light goes out after a few days. The deal did pull my code and said random engine misfire. Told me if it keeps happening to bring it back and they will look into it more.
