Exclamation The mysterious Backfire! SES light

I know allot of you have been experiencing this backfire SES light.

I just spoke with a friend of mine who is a Service Manager for a dealer. He just told me there is a possible service bulletin out there (or about to be) in circulation regarding this issue. He is going to dig into this tomorrow and get back to me. But so far this is what I got:

He said there is a "gyration" inside the transfer case (some EVOs) which is somehow causing the backfire and SES (at highway speeds). The solution at this point is to replace the tranny.

I'm sorry I don't have more of the specifics just yet, but as soon as I hear back from him I will let you guys know. He said he would fax me over the bulletin if he can get his hands on it.

I don't know. He did say something about the SES light being a software issue and that is working on a reflash for the ECU. Now how that could possibly tie into a vibration coming from the tranny is beyond me. Maybe it doesn't and this info is too preliminary. But I wanted everyone to know what I found out so they didn't just keep scratching their heads.

Well at least is aware of this problem in some capacity and are working on it. I will keep you posted as soon as I get any new information.

wow- pretty soon cars will come with an RJ45 connector so you can download patches for the ECU-- lol. Who says Microsoft doesn't have its hands in everything?

Someone posted a while back regarding this issue. Here's what he said (taken from a thread in the Trash...):
Out put shaft has play . It is registered as code 300 ( multiple misfire ) and is picked up in the coils . If your stock clutch chatters , this is your problem also . Mitsu pays me to race the EVO , who do you think told me . I have diligently documented all CEL'S . Mitsu and I have come to the conclusion that there is play in the output shaft . We changed all spark plugs , sensors , vacuum hoses , and the EGR . The only thing that was constant was that the CEL came on during DECELERATION , whether it was @ 108mph or 28mph . MITSU will probably issue the recall next week .
That was posted at the end of October...

Forgot to mention he did say the cars with this problem popped a SES light at highway speeds. Thanks for the post!!! Makes much more sense now.

Not the case. This is for the Eclipse and Galant. There is a TSB for these cars only. NOT FOR EVO's

Well at least is aware of this problem in some capacity and are working on it.
Not true!!

Not True again. We have this happen to completely stock EVO's

mitsu is checking for mods
This is true......very true . If you have any mods, they will probaly try void your warranty. Which is bull****.

I've gotten this code since about 3300 miles (car was totally stock). I put in a buscher stage III 1/2 and it's still there. (dealer couldn't help me before I decided to mod the car). I've decided to go the stand alone route.... since Buschur and a few other tuners I've talked to are convinced that the factory ecu is the problem.
This post sounds like this is an issue Misu's going to have to deal with... (my car is fine... then between 75and 95 mph under 15%to25% accel/decel pedal the motor starts missing (dieseling) untill I get completely out of it and then it's fine. But with a new CEL on my dash). I've got 16K now and don't feel any ill effects..... I was at the dealer today no service announcements. ("My" tech is cool and just loves riding in my heated-up EVO ...and no he knows better than to drive my car!) I never felt Mits ever owed me any kind of warranty (buy a race car get a race car warranty!!!) 380HP 16K miles and a stock clutch and yes I drive the **** out of my car. (never owned an automatic tho... 30+ years behind the wheel ;-) )

Actually this guy is a Mitsu technician, he knows a bit more than you may know. The misfire code is always popping up in the car also. I feel that it is in fact a ECU concern and I hope Mitsu can deal with it with a reprogram. It seems to me that the idle control is not working properly at times, therefore causing a dip in idle. I usually get this code when the idle has dipped too low.

That might be true, but if you're gonna shoot down what other people are saying at least back it up with some sort of facts or with some other useful or meaningful content. The way he responded was kind of childish don't you think?

When I spoke to my Service Manger friend at the dealer, he was letting me know this stuff as a FRIEND, not a customer. He said he would even fax me the bulletin if he can get his hands on it. That ain't exactly for public knowledge. And I was just trying help and give others more insight about the problem.

I am just tired of all these idiots, whom for whatever reason, pop into a thread only to make some kind of sarcastic juvenilistic comment or remark. I feel if you don't have anything constructive to add to the topic at hand then keep your mouth shut and go OT for that kind of ****.
