ERL Performance

Hey guys, first post here but have been lurking for the past 5 years. I have a quick question, I want to do a 2.3 stroker in my 05 Evo and I have been looking for a machinest to do so. My uncle is highly recomending ERL Performance, has anyone ever delt with them before? I know a lot of the Evo X guys are doing there stroker kits but have not seen any products for the 8s/9s? It looks like they know what there doing with the in house machine shop.

Thanks!

I would say look for someone else. I have a buddy that had them do his ERL Evo X. and its toast. Its a long story, but i know of two ERL Evo motors that went south. That in it self could happen to any shop, but the worst part is the customer service... very bad communication and lack of call backs ect..
There are way better customer service and Evo expert engine builders out there. I would look at English, Buschur. Just my 0.2 cents

I'm not sure about these bad stories w/ ERL. The one motor I know of, ERL raised issues b/c another shop did half the work and it was assumed that the stroker kit is what failed. I do believe they took it back and paid to have pistons checked etc.

ERL is an amazing shop, they build spotless motors. Hell, AMS' X engines have their sleeving done by ERL. Enough said.

I wouldnt say they are spotless. There have been numerous issues with their 4B11s.

you also cant compare a 4Bll to an 4g63. 2 different motors. the ones obviously isnt as strong as the other I say if your going to spend the money wich im sure would be the same amount there or anywhere else then goto someone whos proven to make good motors on a 4g63. not hondas and 4B11s

Ours fail under power and even then when was the last one you heard of (totally failed, not headgasket)? The issues we have seen with the ERL so far were engineering related. I am sure its small stuff and am not being negative. I was simply trying to say that they arent 100% fail free. Spotless implies perfection, perfection means no fail. I know of 2 that failed for no apparent reason other than clearances or engineering was not adequate.

Stuff breaks when you push it and you are right that it doesnt matter who builds it.

EnglishRacing, AMS, Buschur, etc. We all build motors and you push them hard enough they will break.

Everyone has Had motors that fail period! Every name listed has had multiple engines let go for a variety of reasons. Do your homework and you'll find who fits your needs the best.

The reason why I was shooting for ERL was my uncle recommended them to me, but hes a big turbo V8 guy, and also the fact they are the cheapest in price for when I talked to Buschur and AMS to build a stroker short block. I have not called English racing and I might PM you for a quote after this post.

You know JAM is not too far from you right? You may not hear as much about them on evom but do a little research and you will quickly see they have a great reputation with 4G63's. http://jacksonautomachine.com/

Imo, you are best off with a local builder that will stand behind their work. Have them do the install and tune then (heaven forbid) anything goes wrong they should have your back in making it right.

Think global, shop local.

I try and stay away from internet drama because my time is very limited. We are extremely busy and that is why I'm not on here much but when I read stuff like this, I want the reader to get the full story.

When another shop posts something about another shop, that shop really should post accurate information. Honestly, why another shop would post negative stuff about us when they have never bought anything from us seems underhanded to me.

Even though we've seen issues out out of other engine builders, you don't see ERL on the forums trying to cast them in a bad light. We are just trying to do the very best we can, having done our homework and R&D. The 4B11 engine is still relatively a new engine and there is still lots to be worked out on this engine as we continue to push it's limits.

We were questioned by English in regards to our Street Stroker "engineering" and when they were able to figure out that the rod to stroke ratio was well within spec for a stroker engine, I never heard anything more about our "engineering".

We have the engine that had the issue and are waiting to hear back on the pistons but it certainly looks like the pistons were leaned out. I know some will say that I'm saying that because we don't want to stand behind our product but if anyone really knows ERL you would say that ERL ALWAYS takes care of issues that were caused by ERL but.......... ERL will not and has never warrantied a short block due to injector failure and or faulty tune. The jury is still out and we will find out soon.

We at ERL are committed at striving to put out the best product on the market. We always have room to improve and will continue to look at ways to do that but what I can say is that we have some of the best machinists and engine builders working with some of the best equipment in this market here at ERL and with that combination comes success on the street and on the track.

I'm not interested in a back and forth about this and we will state the facts when we get them.

turboedv6 we should have your 4G63 quote back to your Uncle today.

Just one more thing. I think all shops including would be better off to just allow their product to speak for itself rather than trying to cast others in a bad light.

I had one of the erl motors that failed. The injectors they are trying to emply failed have never had a issue on e85 and the motor never saw a drop of pump gas so that issue is a non issue now if i could get a return email from erl about the progress of the piston examination at wiesco i would be much happier than no response at all. AS soon as we get a response if it is in erl's favor the pistons will be sent off to be analised by mfred who is a member of these boards and also has a phd in metals with a full lab to take a little better look at what happened here. Its been 2 months and i have had no contact from erl other than one time right after the motor was recieved. I already have a new motor up and running but that gives them no excuse for delaying or not persuing results in a timely fashion. One thing to consider is english racing has seen hundreds of motors damaged from running lean and they feel strongly that most likely this was not the case here. One thing i will be currious to see is if in the future erl finds a way to put oil squiters in thier 4b11 builds. From my point of view i would say that if the motor failed from anything it would be from the 8500 recomended rpm limit and the distance the pistons come out of the bore at the bottom of the stroke and the lack of squirters when there is such high piston speeds. From what i have been told and can see in pictures of my pistons most of the heat apears to be on the skirts and the block shows the same signs of damage from the stroke. I wasnt going to post in this thread but if erl wants to post and try to insinuate that the problem was a fueling issue it leads me to believe they are not waiting for results from wiesco as they told me they would to make up thier mind on what happened to this build. Its just been funny how easy they are to contact when you need a motor and how hard they are to cantact if you need answers to a problem. I have never asked for a free anything from erl i decided to go to a 2.0 the day the damage was found and im happy with my desision my new motor has been flawless so far. I had issues from day one with exsessive nock, oil consumption, and blow bye with the stroker so it wasnt a hard decission to go back to the 2.0. ERL i told you from day one you are not obligated to help me in any way i let you take the motor back to evaluate it with the intent that i would have it back sooner than later. So light a fire under wiesco *** and send me my block back with the pistons 2 months is long enough i will put it back together with or without your help. This isnt my first go around with this sort of thing and its pretty well living up to my expectations this is why i didnt want to send the block back in the first place
