Exclamation AC Whining? Compressor?

Good morning evolutionm members! Before I go on about my problem, let me give you all some background information first. I haven't ran AC in this car for about two years and recently I got sick of the Chicago heat especially since I am fasting this month. My compressor never made any sort of noise before, obviously, because the clutch wasn't engaging or dis-engaging. Just yesterday I replaced my condenser and re-charged the system myself. The car is blowing cold-air and everything seems to be working properly but the compressor is making a loud whining noise at idle and on acceleration.

I believe it could be the compressor/clutch assembly itself in which I would need a new unit. I will try spraying some belt dressing to see if it is just that. If not, then is there any way I can test the compressor? I know I didn't overcharge the system at all. I charged it at an ambient temperature of 85 degrees and pressure in the system held between 45-55psi. I have also been searching on the forum and came up with limited results. Can I buy a used compressor in working condition when it came off the car and expect it to work flawlessly on mine? I have read that it is supposed to be capped right away when taken off to prevent dirt or debris from getting inside. Any help would be appreciated on this matter!

Could be the bearings. My eclipse made this kind of noise and it ended up being the bearings. There's always a risk in buying used parts. Would recommend buying a new compressor.

My AC compressor went out on me during those hot weeks. I rarely use my AC also. Total of maybe 5-10hrs since new in 05. They sell aftermarket compressors for about $150. I'm going to try a used one my buddy has laying around first.

Haha buying a new compressor isn't what I wanted to hear! Wizzo, when will you be trying out the used one? I will probably just end up buying an aftermarket one then because I need my AC asap. School is right around the corner and buy commute is 1.5 hrs each way.

I have had a lot of experience replacing A/C compressors on cars as I live in the south and always had cars that had 100k+ miles on them.

Do not buy a remanufactured unit, it's a waste of time. Used or new is your best bet.

If yours is working then don't bother replacing if you don't use it often. To maintain you A/C, make sure you run it once a month to circulate the oil in the system and lubricate you o-rings.

So you are saying NOT to buy a non-oem unit correct? A used/new oem is the way to go? Care to explain why this is? Mine is running flawlessly but making the whining noise. It will not go away if I lube it up some more?

Remanufactured parts are inferior to oem. I will never buy a remanufactured A/C Compressor or Alternator in my lifetime.

You might trying replacing the compressor oil in your system.

I would just keep running it until it dies completely.

I'll try replacing the oil in my system and see where that takes me. Oh trust me, I plan on running it until it dies completely. Winter is right around the corner. Just yesterday I went to use the AC and it started blowing hot air. UGH!!!!

Totally agreed, I would only use a new or Good used oem one, unless it was some beater and just wanted it to get you through the summer. And most people dont know about running the system to get the oil circulating to keep everything wet inside. Also the ac kicks on whenever you switch it to defrost airvent mode if no one knew also
