Taping????

Ok well I bought an evo that needed some work.....long story short It sounds like something from the head it has a built motor and turns on first try. I really dont think its a bearing because you hear nothing from the bottom end you hear it up top now I am asking what do you think it could be from my experience I would say valve or lifter tick like the dsm had. But is this usual on an evo??? I know its hard to say without a vid but it just taps all through the rpms and Im definatly sure it aint a bearing.......

Yes, lifter tick is very common, just like the old DSMs. The 4G63 is a noisy motor in general.

well if i remember correctly after you pull them and bleed the air out after reinstall, its recommended to rev and hold rpms about 3k for like 10-15 seconds, do that a few times, after a few times, the noise should go away unless theres another issue present, you sure you reinstalled the rocker arms right?

I think that they can only be installed one way. I have had lifter tick since I bought the car new, I just got used to hearing it over time.

The JAM's do the same as well. I haven't heard anything on the GSC's, but it seems no matter how big the port, it will still tick over time.

they all might be collapsing, best bet buy a new set or swap another set of known good oem lifters, when you bleed them how did you bleed them? when i bled mine i used a bit of good new oil in a plastic container took each old lifter, used a paper clip collapsed the pintle iirc inside of it did it a few times, got some gunky old oil out in another container, then pushed the new lifter in the new oil, and then set it aside in the order it was in the head, and kept goin to each till i was done. Then I reinstalled, now iirc theres a 2 part process to reinstallin them in the head, i forget off the top of my head the 2nd part but do a search on here for how to bleed and properly reinstall the lifters. good luck.

Cracked Guides can make a ticking noise. We had an engine we put together we chased our tail on that had guide issues and made a tapping sound. we changed lifters, cams, rollers, and injectors before we removed the head and checked the valves and guides.

checking for rod bearings is easy just pull the coil to each cylinder seperatly while the car idles if the tapping stops with the coil pulled than its a rod bearing

It might be a good idea to do both a compression test(pressure) and the leakdown test(leakage) to get a better picture of the health of your engine.

My stock injectors are really loud, you might check that. I thought it was lifters for the longest time, but then happened to just feel one of the injectors and yup...that was it.
