replacement axle

i got a replacement driver side axle from advance auto parts and before installing i noticed it was missing 4 teeth on the inside where it slides onto the shaft (2 next to each other on the opposite sides of each other) Now I have a big leak and wondering if this is my problem before taking this back. my axel seal was fine when i went to replace my inner cv boot and put the stock axel back on, but the boot didnt hold well.

also is there a shelf brand trans fluid i can use, i usually use amsoil but its damn near impossible to get over the weekend and need something asap that i can run for a while

In my experience, only because the seal was fine before you changed the axle doesn't mean its fine now. Its happened to many ppl including myself. You should only use good fluids like OEM or Amsoil, I wouldnt trust anything else (I'm assuming you speaking of TC fluid).

The missing theeth your speaking about shouldn't go past the outer seal either way, so it shouldn't cause a leak. ??? it was difficult to understand exactly what you were discribing

yea i think its a bad seal or c-clip, i just pulled it and compared both and they look the same so how do you install the seal correctly. from what i have read the axle is supposed to push the seal in, i shouldnt hammer it in with a block of wood.

i usually use amsoil but dont like dropping $15 a bottle to have it leak on the floor so ill be tryin Pennzoil Synchromesh for a few thousand to be sure its sealed before going back to amsoil.

when I replaced the seal I used a properly sized socket to press it into the case. The axle should not be pressing on the seal as the inner diameter of the seal isn't supported by anything. The outer part of the seal is as that is the surface you need to press on for install.

Have you resolved this issue yet. Interested in the quality of the advance auto CV shaft. I didn't realize they sold replacement cv axle shafts there for our cars. The dealer wants $600 plus for one here in NY.

You guys don't have an axle/driveshaft shop locally? Most city's should? Those small places usually are the ones rebuilding/refurbishing parts for oreilly, autozone, advanced auto parts, etc. I usually take mine to a small place here in Dallas that charges me $20-$25 per cv boot repair. Good luck.

I have worked there, and I must say that for our type of application, it is not worth it. For a cheap DD id get it the GSP Axles. But not for my Evo. I have seen far too many come returned as defective after a few months.

Advanced carries other brands that are also Lifetime warranty. They may be a bit more expensive, but worth it on the long run.
Also, you can look on the classifieds here for some stock ones, or have advance call their salvage yard to get some stock axles for you.
Good Luck

Didnt know about the salvage yard thing, but for DD the GSP has done good, It was pain to install I couldnt get it on all the way so i took it to the dealer and it cost me 80 and they said they had problems trying to get it on as well. but i would recommend getting a decent used used one rather than the GSP replacement just because stock is much easier to install.

Yea I figured for the most part. I did buy one off of here from a vendor used which is leaking so I have to replace this or just the boot... not sure yet.

I've also bought a used rear off of here with no problems... 10k miles so far

I read our warranty for the 10yr/100k mile and it does say these are covered from normal wear and tear so I'm going to give it a shot.

Has anyone else had this issue? I can not get this thing to lock into place (on passenger side). I never had problems with the factory one but this AXLE is being a pain.. I have installed it twice now.

Never knew this axle was a problem. I also bought a replacement driver side axle from Advanced and have ran it for 2-3 years. Haven't had much of a problem with it.

Is there a difference between the 2003/2004 axle and the 2005 axle because of the ACD? I just found out that the axle they use at Advance is the same for 2003-2006 but the one that Orielly's uses is different in 2005-2006.

I thought this might be the reason for my issues

If he's pulling the axle it's tranny fluid that comes out of the t-case cv seal not t-case fluid. Also I replaced the passenger seal because it was jacked up. Just used this piece of plastic and made sure it was nice and square and no more leak.
