Well there goes a cam...

So I have had a tapping in my motor for a while now tore it down multiple time and could not figure out what was going on. This would only tap between 2 and 4000 rpm at a light load. finally I was out doing a couple of practice launched and noticed the tapping became more frequent. Long story short motor had such a bad drag on it that it shut it off at idle. i could start it but it would not idle because of the amount of friction from this cam. I am hoping this was the tapping, it seems like something must have clogged the oil passage to this cam journal. Here are some pictures!!! MINI CARNAGE lol

The cam is trash, it was a HKS 272 the head is repairable, they have to puddle weld it then like hone it.

im no expert, but i would think the head would need to be heat treated again so the journal surface wasnt too soft.

any idea what caused it? i would hate to see you fix the head, put it back together and have the problem reappear. i would also replace the oil cooler as it probably has aluminum in it so you dont wipe out a bearing.

It wouldnt be the cams fault unless it was way oversized but I would pull the head which you obviously already did and check ALL the oil passages are clean and free with air or steamcleaner or something. Wouldnt want it to happen again. Pulling the pan and changing the oil cooler is a good idea too and cut open the oil filter to see what is in that.

those are all on the chopping block, i have been searching for a cheap oil filter cutting tool, i have cut them open before with a cut off wheel however this can provide false results because of the abrasive cutting process. the head will be completely cleaned and blown out at the shop though! thanks for the input!

i had this same thing happen to me but in a dsm. Same problem i think clogged oil galley port, i bought a car that sat for 3 years. so i did timing belt, oil, etc. and after 200 miles i pulled the valve cover cause of an aweful dragging noise when i first started the car. Sure enough it was toast. lol. Sorry to hear that man, but yes it is repairable its like getting an align hone for the crank, except its for the cams.

Yeah I dropped the head off to a local shop yesterday he sounded very confident in being able to fix it. Did you have any kind of tapping noise with yours?
