valve seals popped off??

So, since I bought my evo it has had a smoking problem and I have been going through 6qts in 3k miles. It has been getting worse, about 2 qts in 400 miles. I bought some gsc cams and supertech seals. When I opened it all up, all 8 of my exhaust valve seals had popped off of the guides and rested at the top of the valve at the retainer. Has anyone ever seen that before? What are some causes?

It will happen if you are running dual valve springs with stock sized seals.

Yeah, that's true... on most dual springs, the inner spring will rub and sometime pull off the valve seal. In this case, be sure to use reduced diameter seals. However, even with the reduced diameter seals, I have seen inner springs rubbing the seal... most likely from the spring seat not being concentric to the guide.

They are single springs and I have not come out of the closet yet so any other ideas? All 16 seals were brown (old) and the new are in-brown ex-blue. Maybe someone put intake seals on the exhaust valves.

Fel-Pro seals are all brown, both the intake and exhaust. Maybe the installer didn't push them down all the way. If you have the head off, you may want to check out the ID of the guides. That's certainly strange, for sure.

What was the outcome to this? Did you fix it and is it ok now?

LOL I was gonna delete that post by Bcity but then you took it so well and played it off in stride I'm gonna leave it. Nice work!

SO, what's the history of this head? I re-used my stock valvestem seals when I had the head off to get decked for a HG job and about 10-15k later I had to take the head off again due to stretched head studs...I found the same thing...the car was going through a lot of oil and all of the valve stems were like popped off...I couldn't find the springs or anything for most of them, luckly they didn't cause any damage.

I replaced them with *fresh* seals and beehive springs, no issues after that.

How many miles did you have on the car when it started using oil?

It was consuming oil when I bought it at 59k. Currently at 70k. I replaced the seals with the head on (what a hard job) the smoking stopped for almost a week and now its back. The only thing I can think of is, the guides are worn and letting exhaust backpressure go through and pop the seals up. Idk. I'm gonna remove the head (in a month or so) and put all new valves, seals, guides, maybe port and s2 cams. I'll have to put up with it for now though.

Scheides and I did my HG a month or so back, had a couple not re-seal when the valves went back in (I see a pattern here ). I blew out the dipstick during a pull following the job, can't imagine blowing out a seal before that point, I'd guess it takes significantly more pressure. Everything was still in when it was torn down again to do the bottom end.

I believe his car had between 100-120k on it at that point, but that was a few years ago so I may not be remembering right.

Well mine did the same thing. Only 2 exhaust valve stem seals popped off. I was burning oil so I took my vc off and saw the 2 seals at the top. I have supertech duals that came with blue seals.

I've done a 4G63 seal job with the head on too. Other than the arm exercise, messing with the tiny keepers was my main gripe. As I pulled the valve springs I wiggled each valve stem to see the condition of the guide and a couple were kinda loose. However, the engine quit using oil and was still sound when I sold the car. It really should have had a valve guide job. A loose guide will wear out the seal.

I fixed mine over the weekend. I actually had 3 exhaust valve stem seals that popped off. You could see the shiny spots where the inner spring was rubbing it. I removed the seals and brake cleaned the seal and mating surface with brake cleaner and reinstalled them. I also rotated the bottom spring retainer 180. So far so good. Finally I can sit at a stop light without that nasty oil burning smell. Hopefully its a last time fix. By the way I used this tool which worked awesome. Here is the link

Glad to hear you fixed everything. Also good to know that tool is worth buying.

Now get to the track
