Stock Turbo Upgrade?

I recently have began looking for a turbo upgrade for our stock turbo. I searched this board and relatively found nothing helpfull, although turbochargers.com is supposed to be making one that actually works right and produces power. Does anyone have any information on developement of this upgrade? maybe a 20g wheel? The hardest part I would think of is finding one that works on our turbos.

I contacted them about a month back, and they said that it definitely wasn't a 20G wheel. They wouldn't specify which wheel it was and they said that it WASN'T available yet. They were still developing the turbo. Why they advertise it on their site, I don't know.

I am aware of another product that is upcoming, its basically a hot side housing that bolts up to the twin-scroll manifold (stock or header) uses an external wastegate, and appears to be a ballbearing turbo assembly. It should come with everything needed to bolt it up to the stock engine and subsystems.. I'll wait for them to officially announce it.

From what it looks like, it will make many "Keep it simple" customizers very happy.. looks like a good piece of hardware.

Keep in mind the stock turbo is good for 400whp...maybe more. I like the Buschur idea which will let you bolt up any of the DSM turbos.

So are you saying that the only difference is the turbine wheel and housing?

Also, did you ever get around to measuring the JIC manifold runner's thickness?

sure the stock turbo is a good start, but with a larger wheel on there, you wont have to pay so much for other mods that produce less hp.

if you are upgrading your turbo the buschur idea is good. pay attention to the hot side and make sure it is larger than stock... you'll get lots more gains that way, an appreciable amount of boost can be made from stock or close to stock size compressor. being able to pipe out all your exhaust air making it run through the turbo better (increased breathing efficiency) is where you will get gains without turning up more boost.

I agree and disagree with this. You really can't compare the exhasut a/r of two different "brands" of turbine housings. While a bigger will allow you to flow more but the ar is just a ratio and may not indicate how the unit will flow. Also, remember that a compressor wheel is only going to flow so much air. The 16g turbo is a fine unit but the 50 trim is much better.

Mike, if you're gonna spend the money then buy the buschur stuff. The Tsi is just about ready for a rematch from a roll! 3125lbs of fury with my fat **** in it!

Dont tell them anything let Vishnu and rnr stuff huge gt30's down their throat. 50 trim turbos are old technology remember keep that in mind when your huge laggy GT30 powered evo gets its doors doors sucked off by a well setup 50 trim or BR500 setup on pump gas

For what its worth, the "Bolt-on" turbo I was shown is an entirely new unit, not a modified stock housing.. It has an external wastegate, and the hot-side housing is a new casting designed to interface with the stock manifold. THey will announce their product when their ready.

And the JIC manifold's thickness is thicker than "The typical" 1/16" thin walled stainless.. Though its got some messy welds that need to be cleaned up on the inside of the pipes.
