Actually, a leakdown test would be better, as a dyno wouldn't tell you much, even if others have dyno'd there before.

I have had lengthy conversations with the current owner. He bought the car thinking that he was going to keep it for a long time, but he and his wife recently found out that they are expecting a child, so he needs to find something more practical for family reasons. I've been lucky in my recent car buying experiences to find cars that the owners don't necessarily want to get rid of but have to for family type reasons. Those seem to be the ones that were taken care of properly.

I think that the owner feels he broke the car in properly, but he just didn't change the oil at 1000 or so miles as I would most likely done.

I don't have the luxury of seeing what the manual suggests so knowing he was under what they recommend is some peace of mind.

Some evos detonate stock. I've seen evos dynoed on the same day, on the same dyno, vary wildly. Modded cars putting down less than stock, stock cars making anywhere from 220 to 240 whp, etc. Its good to know where the car is at when you buy it.

True, but discrepancies like that are due more to what the ecu has learned from driving, and other variables, than an actual "mechanical advantage". For instance, were these cars all running the exact same batch of gas? Either way, I think the guy who started this post is worrying too much. If the guy seems honest and competent, then go for it.

Buy it, enjoy it, but always remember: it's just a car

Car has 8000 miles on it, a leakdown is is a little extreme...changing the oil at 1000 miles is to get the metal fragments out of the new engine. Since modern engines have very little of of that kind of wear when new, I wouldn't worry about it in the least bit. If it was a newly rebuilt '68 427 HiPo Chevy I would worry about that kind of thing...it ain't, buy it and drive drive drive....

I wouldn't go any higher (unless he counters with 24200 or something), just be patient and he will accept.

Breaking in procedure ?

well i just bought a blue lancer evolution 2 weeks ago... and i was just reading the manual the other day... about breaking in procedures etc... plus the turbocharger and how to cool it down after driving.

well i already knew about the turbocharger etc... but i never knew that you were not supposed to go over 5000 rpms untill ur car has at least 1000 miles on it...

well anywayz i didnt know that when i first went in to buy it... and than agreed to a test drive, like a day before i bought it. The IDIOT salesman was just telling me about driving safely and not speeding and stuff... so i was like ya i aint gona speed... than he goes and asks if i wanted to test drive it... and i was like sure since i was gona buy it why not right? well we get in and the *** is driving... i told him about the turbo and how u have to warm it up and cool it down before and after driving... he was like o ok, i never knew that.

so i thought i was gona get to drive... but instead he decides to drive it for 10 miles.... going all the way up to 7000 rpms and shifting hard... speeding into redlights and breaking extremely hard.... (hurting my evo) and to top off the extreme rpms extreme speeds extreme breaking, on a car that had only 22 miles on it, he decides to forget and turns off the engine thus HURTING the turbo !! o ya by the time he was done it had 33 miles on it...

so ya i was just wondering if my car is permanently damaged or anything... since u r supposed to break in the car first until u can drive it up until redline and stuff...

plus the not cooling the turbo and everything... plz tell me so i can go yell at him !! =P o and i will be posting up pics of my evo soon too =P

thanks in advance =D

o and i know it was stupid of me to even let him drive... but i thought he was going to let me drive it around a little... but it never happened.

o and the reason i didnt say anything as he was driving was cuz i was out of breath from the extreme Gs that the evo can produce

o well its over now... i cant change nething... but i still can yell at the guy =P maybe he can give me a checkup for free too and repair ne damage that might be there =D

my break in is the same as all of my other vehicles... being this car is factory filled with synthetic there really isn't much that can "break-in" I basicly didn't go over 3k for the first 250 miles then after that i gradutally went over in thousand increments.... AND durring the entire break-in i never maintained the same rpm for long periods, always varied rpms gradually and let the car back off in gear at 3k-4k. I never floored the car until break in was over. Breaks and clutch were broken is as described in the book, clutch never got hard releases until breakin was done.

hopefully, nothing is damaged. for the next 1500-2000, i would drive the car very easily, not going over 4k rpms, and going very easy on the brakes.

problem with runnign the motor at low rpms for a few thousand miles then hitting redline all of a sudden is the motor may be "broken-in" but think... its never seen high rpms so how is it suppose to perform like it has...

Question I'm going a trip this weekend and...

just about passed my 600 mile break-in period. Odo reads 540 miles right now. In the users manual it says not to drive at high speed for at least 300 miles. I'm way past that 4 sure but I'm still weary about driving at high ways speeds for more that an hour. Am I being too cautious?

go out for a 30 mile drive somewhere tonight, and then drive back 30 miles home.. should take less than an hour and u can feel satisfied knowing u got thru the break in period.
