Against popular belief I have been told the same thing by many "old school" mechanics. Their words exactly "get on it right out of the lot"

So then according to this theory we have to get on the throttle a few times, do some engine breaking.....but before all that we have to change out the synthetic and put in dino oil? Seems a bit overly complicated to me.

For a turbo car I would be afraid of pulling some metal shavings into the oil cushion that lubs the turbo....

This was not written for turbo cars apparently....I for one would not recommend boost for the break in period.....I do not agree/disagree with my post .....just thought it would make interesting reading.....

Well, some of the professional engine tuners, after the full assemble of the new engine, run that engine driven by the DC motor at the slow pace for about a day or so. They, of course, make sure that lubrication is all more then sufficient during that time. That allows everything to seat where it should be without any torture to the engine with the high loads.

Since, I am on my third engine at the moment, what I was doing is to first put some regular (non synthetic) oil in the engine and start the car and let it idle for about 20 min. Then change the oil with another regular one and drive it easy for about 500 miles. After that, I used a normal synthetic oil and started to get on it within the next 500 miles. The first race was just after that!!

Yeah that "get right on it" mentality does not apply to Turbo vehicles though. Although I completely agree the early oil change is crucial.

You should probably ask this question in the Lancer forum...

Just remember people... the Evolution REQUIRES Synthetic oil and comes with Synthetic oil in it. Do not put regular oil in it at any time... the oil won't be able to handle the extreme loads of that engine.

This is a good additive also, especially when "breaking in". Sorry I cannot find the one for the lancer, but I included it to give people the idea.

Magnetic Oil Drain Plug

Fireball, does the Evo eat Synthetic oil or something? Running any (same weight) motor oil in a car for a short peroid of time cannot hurt it.

It'll be interesting with the Evo 8 with 19 psi at 3500. How can you not boost? Your right in the sweet spot if your cruising on the freeway.

The synthetic is especially good for the turbo. In general turbos will live much longer on synthetic than otherwise. I'm sure there are other reasons, but that is the biggest one that comes to mind for me.

But how is it going to be with the Evo 8 with 19 psi at 3500? How can you not boost? I really doubt that the turbo will not be spooling around 3000 rpm. Especially if your cruising on the freeway, it'd be right in the sweet spot for instant throttle.
Keep in mind that the turbo spools up based on the load on the engine. If you are easy on the accerlation it will not boost at all.

I don't really believe that one!Today's regular oils are so damn good that can be used for any car that is around. Synthetic oils are way better then any car (even our precious EVO) really needs them for the regular use. The thing is that it just gives you an extra safety that people are willing to pay (me included). I read an article a while back where they where testing most of the today's oils and they all passed requirements for today's engines.

Saying that, I do believe that is just trying to cover their asses and just have another way to screw us if they need to!

But, this is just IMHO

ps. and I also use synthetic all the time...

The biggest thing w/ synthetic oil is that you don't want to keep changing from regular to synth and back all the time, as how you'll mix them. The Evo COMES with synth from the factory (Mobil 1.. the best stuff). I'd strongly recommend against changing it.
