I have heard that ecu's learn as you drive.
If you move to a new altitude you should disconnect the battery to "start over".
Maybe we should reset our ecu's after break-in.
Although if it uses an average it won't take long to change on it's own.
I don't know.

You can theoretically "drive your car like hell" during the break-in period, the IMPORTANT thing is: YOU HAVE TO WARM THE ENGINE UP CORRECTLY AND COOL IT DOWN CORRECTLY. Driving like hell is not really recommended for TURBO engines, that is the major difference. If you just bought a Viper, yes, warm the engine up for like 5 minutes, then run the thing like mad. Then drive normally for the last 10 minutes to cool the engine down.

Race car engines are broken in on a dyno, the most important thing is to increase the RPM and load on SHORT runs, DO NOT run the engine at a set rpm for a long time, the RPM must be increased over time and varied.

But, I'm by no means an "expert" so take everything I say with a grain of salt. Do a search on google about break-ins for engines and you'll get a lot of info.

You don't actually scrub the tires.
This means drive normally.
That will clean the tires.
New tires have mold release on them and do not stick as well.

Heat cycling will make your tires last a lot longer.
I don't know why Mitsubishi does not mention that.
Maybe heat cycles the tires at the factory.

Well, you gotta remember, the Yokohama's are Advan compound, which is a different compound than most tires.

Skibum has it correct. This is actually part of the delivery process with a new EVO when it comes to the above listed information. Any soft compound tire will have skin layers when driven. That is what happens when soft compound is ran on any road. Race tracks are especially smooth and that helps use less wear on soft sticky tires. The common roads eat up the tires faster.

Yeah, I have read the Break-In Secrets many times, but again, that is talking about naturally aspirated engines, not turbo engines, turbo engines have the added heat factor which requires post cooling.

He says to change oil after 20 miles... anyone have isight on this?

The best thing you can do for your engine is to change your oil and filter after the first 20 miles. Most of the wearing in process happens immediately, creating a lot of metal in the oil. Plus, the amount of leftover machining chips and other crud left behind in the manufacturing process is simply amazing !! You want to flush that stuff out before it gets recycled and embedded in the transmission gears, and oil pump etc...

That theory poses a warranty problem.
If I drive it that hard on break-in probably would not like it
Does the Evolution have a black box like the Corvette?
They know every little thing you do to the car.

3 more words on break- in:
NO SYNTHETIC OIL !!

Use Valvoline, Halvoline, or similar 10 w 40 Petroleum Car Oil for at least
2 full days of hard racing or 1,500 miles of street riding.
After that use your favorite brand of oil.
