Evo Engine Break In [Super Hyper Mega Merge]
Yeah, I kinda follow that route when I usually buy a car... But I respect my EVO more than any other so I didn't get on it until after about 350 miles.... Wasted a lightning that was talking a lot of ****... I love this damn thing...
We all know part of the reason for correctly breaking in the engine is because Fully Synthetic oil on a new engine causes component wear to be minimal.. Oddly enough, when breaking in an engine, a little friction is good because it gets the parts to 'seat together' correctly. However, I am also guilty of accidentally going over 5000 RPM once or twice. Part of the problem with breaking in at RPM's much over the recommendation is the possibility that you will wear the parts a little more than necessary which may lead to oil burning (piston ring seal) or possibly excessive clearances in the valvetrain.. Truth is, the breakin recommendation appears to be more targetted to correctly breaking in the Tranny, rear gears, brakes, tires, suspension components and, not so much the engine. I've broken in engines by revving them for severel minutes, and then varying the speed for a little while more.. But that is a V8 engine destined to be raced, and it had breakin lubricants, and non-synthetic oil (which is most often recommended for breakin) once I got about 150 miles on the car, I changed the oil and filter, inspected a few easily accessible wearing parts, and now go racing with it.
Hard break in vs gentle break in - post please
I just hit 195 miles tonight and said the hell with it and ran it up through the gears at full throttle..... so I wanted to see some people post so we can see who's car ends up being faster, more reliable, etc... in the long run.
I hit 6000 rpm at about 100 miles, then 7200 (or so) at 195 tonight..... I will basically drive it now like it was meant to be.

Running it under 5K until 600 miles. Up to 6200rpm after that. Changed oil at 1K running it hard now and yes you can powershift the evo unlike the WRX.
Yeah, i'm using Moble 1 synthetic with a mitsubishi oil filter to prevent any rumored warrantee problems if something happens.

drive it like you own it, I have an OZ and the first day I got it I took it as fast as it would go, if its going to break you want it to break while its under warranty. I don't baby the motor in my car at all, people who putt around in cars get carbon build up and eventually have problems.
I decided to take Cladius's advice on getting metal chunks out of the turbos. That's my reasons for taking it easy. "normal aggressive driving under 5K" for first 600miles. The fact is that my oil was really dirty at 1000miles so i decided to change it and i will again at 3000miles. After that i'm planning to change it every 3000miles depending on how the oil looks.
Took it to 5k up to 600 miles with very little boost...plenty of revs for the first 50 miles(over run rpm's)...changed oil and filter at exactly 600 ...very black and dirty....now at a 1000 miles and running it up to 7k...still careful on the cogs though...playing with the idea of changing fluids in diffs and box
I bought 2 when I picked up my car...part # is MD356000..it is the same as the outlander filter...also remember to get the aluminum washer for the drain plug....the old one needs to be removed from the bolt...DO NOT FORGET.. it is a crushable one
i kept the revs under 5K for the first 400 or so, then the occasional tap up to 6K... just past 600 miles and beat the **** out of it the other day to clear out any deposits from nursing the motor... my friend was behind me and said he saw a black cloud billow out of the exhaust when i shifted into 2nd @ 7200... lol this car rocks

Revs under 3500 for the first 50 miles. I did lots of engine breaking/ downshifting during this time, but no boosting. 51-500 miles, I kept it under 5000 rpms. I did some boosting, but not much. From 501 miles (which starts this afternoon for me) and through to it's selling/death date, the car will be driven the way it should be....
