Blowing multiple coil packs road racing...co-incidence or issues??
Hey guys,
Want to pick some of your brains for the above issue.
Evo 5 I tune has popped three of the same side coil pack the last two road racing days he has attended.
- First one was an OEM with unknown milage.
- Second and third were aftermarket "Superspark" branded item as low as 600 miles old.
Is its co-incidence that they burn out with a strong electrical smell due to the massive heat generated?? Or is there another issues like wiring, earthing etc that someone has seen before?
- He runs with the cover off
- Engine mods are only exhaust, E85, tune
- plugs are BP7ES
- I run the same plugs, coil packs and more boost on the same days without issues.
Wouldn't mind sorting this out before we fit our Spoolin up COP kits.
Cheers
Ben

Coil failure is heat. So your looking at 3 things. Too much external heat... The ecu is charging the coils too long and over heating them..... OR grounding issues.
First thing to check is if the tuner raised the coil dwell settings in the tune. If so you should try going back to the stock settings. If it has stock settings check all your grounds and keep the coil pack grounds away from any others.

I ran into an issue a while back, even with the spoolinup COP I kept roasting coils... The thrid time they fried, they took out the cam sensor, replaced the cam sensor along with the coils and have not had an issue since... so perhaps the whole time it was my cam sensor going out...
