Very Unusual Noise at High Speed - Please Diagnose

//Update 12/30/2011 - More or less confirmed to be wind noise.

Getting a really strange noise at 100+ (I think 110-120) + strong headwind - I noticed this when I was doing my 4th gear pulls for data logging (videos are done in 4th and 5th gear, doesnt make noise til it hits speed) -

I've had no changes since the last time I did these pulls (and didn't have a noise) except:

Changed T-case fluid from Amsoil SVG Gear 75w90 to OEM Diaqueen LSD Gear Oil
Changed Rear diff fluid from Amsoil SVG Gear 75w90 to OEM Diaqueen LSD Gear Oil
Tire Rotation

Fluids were changed by the recommendations of many well informed people. T-case is Stage 1 Shep Built, Rear diff is Cusco Type RS 1.5 way shimmed by TRE + Cusco heavy duty side cover, etc etc.

Anyway, the sound was coming directly from the front left and I have no idea what it is, since the above listed were the only changes. I tried another highspeed pull later down the highway and I had no noise, curiously.

Could it be related to something like the Diaqueen needing time to get coated into everything? Going from synth to dino?
Even still, it's strange that the noise was coming from so far in front (If I had to guess, I'd say front wheel well or even the sideview mirror if I didn't know any better).

Anyone know what this horrendous noise is? It's actually worse in person. FYI, it doesn't happen in other gears, so its gotta be the speed?

I don't think you have anything wrong except the fact that you drive an econobox lol. This sounds like what happens to me whenever I cross oh about 140ish air just finds it way past the windows. I could be wrong but that is what it sounds like to me.

Id go back to a premium synthetic for best protection, instead of a mineral oil such as diaqueen

I had a similar sound like that, turns out it was the mirrors deflecting the air. It was only on the driverside like yours.

i'd agree but i got too many recommendations from other shops to stick with diaqueen.

fwiw i think i will go back to svg gear for the t-case, but i think the rear differential simply just prefers the straight 90 dino oil.. something to do with actually having less additives, which the diff doesnt make as much use of

thanks, given the strong headwind im starting to think that's what it was. when you say similar, it was more or less the same, or somewhat different?

the rubber between the sideview mirror holder and the door? its less consistent on the drivers side in the way it sits but it seems all their. definitely seems possible for something there to make a certain noise at a certain frequency.. alarming how loud it is though, given its WOT, engine speed, turbo, the drivetrain noises, etc..

Sorry, should have been more specific, it was exactly the same. Fold your mirror in do another run and see if it goes away. I can pretty much guarentee you that it'll go away. My car only did that when it was new, it would start at about 70-80mph. That sound went away on its own after awhile.

yes that rubber its held on by plastic clips and its called garnish moulding. i had to replace the entire driver side on my car + clips since it decided to fly off going 140mph before.

gotcha - this has never happened to me until i did those pulls in that headwind, later doing the pull without the headwind i didn't get that noise.
