Well the AEM is just a little more than a A/F and Boost controler... Hell that thing controls just about everything on the car. If you have no clue about a AFC or a MBC or a EBC then the AEM is not the way to go. You need a very indepth knowledge of tuning before you try and take on the AEM. Or you need deep poclets to have someone else tune your car. ( I would never let anyone tune either of my cars.)

Best money would be to get a Re-flash it would take care of your A/F ratios and some of them allow boost control also both for far less than the two together and will be very stealthy. A freind of mine had an SafcII and Dynoflash uploaded just his basic flash and he had more results of power from it than the SafcII plus the added featur of higher rpm and Boost taper adjust and no speed limiter. You might wanna think about it. I know Dynoflash was also offering a special where you could also get an intake as part of the re-flash.

tuning the mbc simply requires you making one or two test runs, and about 1/4 of a turn either way at the most and the most you should have to do this is like twice a year for cold hot season changes and this is only when they are pretty extreme, you'll find yourself playing with the mbc just for kicks sometimes, or fine tuning it for no apparent reason, just for the satisfaction of knowing that everything is "dialed in"
