Boost control voids warranty!

Got my new Aftermarket News this week. They have long article on the aftermarket industry and the manufactures and what voids a warranty.

To my surprise, one factory rep said that a Boost Controler on a SRT Neon would void it's warranty. Most manufactures have the same rules, so if you have one, you might want to check.

The biggest thing that voids a warrranty is Racing the car! Some places will give you some slack, they used a Viper for instance. They know he paid 80K for the car, so they will fix it, but not if he blows the engine.

This article is in an industry journal, so most of you have no access to it.

I have to agree. Boost control is a pretty obvious warantee killer. Good thing there easy to remove and go back to stock.

. My sevice manager told me that increasing boost will not only void the warranty but that it will prevent him from allowing the car to be worked on by his service depatment. I don't know if this is just his policy or is from Mitsu. I did not ask as I did not want to cast suspicion on myself. We were discussing another owners question about how to increase boost and what the ramifications would be if he did so.

If boost is increased by an ecu flash and changing the hose/restrictor "pill" then it would be simple to have the work reversed before having the car serviced under a warranty claim. I believe at least one of the re-flash companys actually does this for thier customers.

Dealers must submit their warranty work to Mistsu for re-imbursment. Some service managers have good raport with their reps and some do not. You can usually plan on them being like insurance adjustors meaning they are looking out for themselves not you. I have purchased four cars from my local dearer since May of 2000 so I use that as leverage with thier General manager and I watch my step.

Any cosmetic mods will not void your warantee. Also adding a rear strut brace and new subframe brace is okay. A ECU flash is stealth also as far as I know. A drop-in high flow filter can be quickly changed back to stock if needed. Catback exhaust is okay also. I don't know about a downpipe.

The Evo8 brochure says to go forth and mod. Does the language in the warranty manual specify what is/is not allowed?

YES, a boost controller CAN void your warranty. Depends on the dealer where you take it. If they want to push the issue they can, or they can choose to do nothing. Where I take mine for service they all know it is modded, but they don't give me a hard time. Try to build a report with these service guys at the dealer, it can go a long way.

A boost controller CAN'T "void" your entire warranty. What does your suspension have to do with boost? NOTHING! What does your electrical system have to do with boost? NOTHING! If they refuse to work on an unrelated claim..talk to a lawyer..they will quickly change their mind when they are reminded it is Federal law to refuse warranty on an unaltered part..Moss Magnusson Act. It's plain and simple, don't let your dealers try to weasel around and out of any warranty claims.
I have had mine at the dealer with exhaust and boost controller and they could care less.

I agree that they cannot void the entire warantee like suspension if you have boost control, but most warantee claims fall under drivetrain/engine and that's where you want coverage and the boost controller will cause a problem with most dealers. Suspension claims are uncommon. Say you lose an alternator, you will be covered.

This subject has been driven into the ground.

Just about any mod you do CAN void the warranty on the part (obviously) and anything that is tied within that part's system.

In this case if you add a boost controller you could risk voiding the warranty on the entire drive train system. No need to get technical about this. That's just the way it is, period. Also, any damage caused to the vehicle as a result of a modification may not be covered either (suspension would be a good example here).

If you are worried about warranty issues and mods you just need to leave the car stock and that way you won't have to worry about it.

You guys ever thought about the fact that if they do surf this site as some believe and you all talk about ECU reflash's.....don't you think they'll get wise and start checking for that too???

Just a thought

Why not be grateful that mitsu will let us buy a race car....that they've talked the feds into allowing into our country ;-)!! I started modding mine because a truck tire took out mt bumper/aero tray FMIC and kick panel (was the whole tread from a semi... 02:00am middle of the desert just me and the damn truck go figure) The Buschur FMIC was cheaper than the factory fmic (see smaller letters) Quit whining about the warranty "buy a race car (AND RACE IT...... even on the street coming home from the store) you deserve a race car warranty" AKA zero nada nichts. Or leave it stock and race it and still have your warranty (other EVOs may be faster but no warranty) I have the code P0300 multicylinder misfire with a service event prior to mods and the reigonal service manager is working with the corp engineeres to get it solved and he knows my car has a bunch of mods. So I think that mitsu is being pretty good considering how we owners for the most part thrash our EVOs ( and man I love beating BMWs, Porsches, Vettes and Vipers on my favorite mountain road).
