I was wondering, if the TME turbo (with titanium wheel) is really good with response, early spool and better power, why didn't Mitsubishi develop it as a baseline for evo 7, 8, 9 turbo (titanium)?

The wheel is made of a titanium aluminide alloy, it is considerably lighter and hits peak boost at about 500 rpm earlier (comparing 6.5/6RS to 6 GSR). But was considerably more fragile than the wheels used in the GSR and was prone to failure at increased boost levels. (I remember reading from a magazine a long time ago so I have no source or evidence sorry).

The TD05HRA (TME wheel) was available on JDM/NZDM evo 7,8,9 RS models. Was it available on the USDM RS?

Tme tend to break under high boost. The ideal is e9 rs or mr. The wheel is revised and light weight.

Go for a Evo 9 turbo with lower boost.

I was planning to buy the evo 6 TME turbo sometime but not soon. So how much boost can it handle? I'm aiming for 365-375WHP on my car and make the car responsive and reduce the lag as much as possible. any advice.

It's like asking how much any turbo can boost. I've seen IX turbos fail at stock and I've seen a dyno result on here doing 32 psi on 93.

The highest power "safe" tune I've seen on a TME was 210wkw (280whp) at 1.4 bar (20 psi). That was using stock internals, aftermarket piping, stock cams on a TME engine.

If you're putting it on a 8/9 engine with a range of other mods, I would imagine 375 whp is achievable but pretty close to the limit. You could consider the turbo from a 9 RS, found this: http://www.tokyomotorsports.com.au/P...ts/Turbos.aspx pricey but it has an option to improve reliability. I'm sure you could find one cheaper and organise the reliability mod by other means.

A conversation I found about the titanium wheels: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...rs-turbos.html

This one here states the IX already has the TD05HRA (the A indicates the Ti alloy wheel) but my 9 GT has a TD05HR, no A. https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/en...low-rates.html

The Ti exhaust wheel first appeared on the evo6 RS but everyone seems to call it the TME wheel for some reason. Anyway they are plenty strong as every RS evo from the 6 on comes with them and they get plenty punishment from the group N boys.

The wheel that got known for breaking was the magnesium comp wheel on the evo9 RS/GT turbos which did have a bad habit of falling apart, I have two broken wheels sitting somewhere.

Have you got some pics of your broken wheels?

Do you know why they failed?

Before running the 7460R, my japspec TME on standard TME turbo (10.5/15g) ran ~210 awkw's @ 23psi on 98ULP and 232.6 awkw's @ 25psi on E-Flex. Still zero shaft play and all blades still good.

I have seen another TME exhaust wheel with damage on a few blades.

I did an amateur run of 12.620 @ 112.58 (1.866 60ft)

Very responsive but I recall the turbo running outta puff up top. 6.5-7.5k rpm felt like forever at the track.
I hope this info helps.

Super thread necro but I post this just as a reference for anyone who may do a search on the subject as this does seem to pop up regularly on this forum.

I have a JDM Evo VI TME with the original 15G HRA turbo, it has done over 90000 klms. I run 1.5 bar (21.75psi) boost and make 340 hp at 6485rpm, and 312 lbft at 4096rpm at the wheels.
My turbo is fine even doing 30 min sessions on the track, and while the highest boost I have run through it is only 25 lbs briefly, I have not heard of these Turbos failing at all even at high boost (whatever one considers 'high').

The only RS Turbos that break are the Evo IX RS with the first series definitely being the worst.

Regarding performance through the rev range, with standard cams torque clearly dropped off from 5500 rpm even though it was still making power up to around 6500. However fitting TOMEI 260 camshafts completely fixed that and it pulls hard to redline now. The only downside was losing some of the early spool, but that will of course always happen when fitting aftermarket cams to at least some degree.

Hope this helps anyone considering this Turbo.

This is an old thread but I agree with Mr. Ralliart as I've never really heard of as many Makinen Turbos failing as that of the Magnesium alloy 9 MR/RS Turbo

And for anyone interested, this is the typical failure of the magnesium compressor wheels:

USDM VIII RS' s had an inconel turbine wheel same as all the other USDM Evo varriants unfortunately.

The TME turbine wheel and the JDM RS wheel although both made from TiAl alloy, are not identical. The JDM VIII RS turbine wheel was a later generation upgrade of the TME turbine wheel. It creates slightly less backpressure.

TheJDM VIII RS turbo as configured by MHI, was a faster spooler than the TME turbo. Care to guess why? Yeah, this is a trick question.

VIII RS had a smaller hotside so slightly faster spooling at the expense of some top end and a bit more back pressure.

@YogiB thanks for posting that pic...ouch!
