rear grinding ID

hey all i've got an 05 8 completely stock with 38k on it. recently theres been a grinding sound coming from the rear, from what i can tell the rear passenger side. sounds like scraping the underside of your car over a speedbump. it didnt used to happen all the time and only occurred when coming to a complete stop in neutral or first.

today it graduated into occurring almost every time i come to a stop or coasting over speed bumps with the brakes.

it feels like the brakes because i can sometimes feel the vibration through the brake pedal but if its the brakes, why do i only feel it when coming to a complete stop at low speed and not any other speed? could it possibly be transmission/differential related or what? should i look for something?

i also read several threads about brake grinding occurring because of dust/rust/debris stuck between the pads and rotors but i blasted it with compressed air and it did not seem to help.

Take a look at the rotors? Do they have large groves in them? Also, pull off your pads and check those. If you have some big groves on your rotors, then it is more than likely time for some new rotors and pads. It sounds like brakes to me personally.

You have achieved the mileage where most Evo owners find they need new rear brake pads. The rears wear out first. If true, the sound is the noise maker on the pad (put there to tell you the pad is shot) rubbing the rotor. At 38K you shouldn't need new rotors.

as said by both posters above, it was indeed the brakes. had an evo expert ride in the car and confirmed my right rear is done and fronts are about to go. thank you both for your help and confirming what i suspected!
