Test pipe, is it obvious?
Hello
I've just replaced the standard exhaust on my Evo 9 with a Litespec catback and a 3" stainless front pipe. I still have the standard cat in and was thinking about replacing it with either a test pipe or a high flow 3' 100cell cat. My question is will people be able to tell that I have a cat delete. I've read that the car starts to smell (exhaust that is) of fuel. I would just go the high flow cat but it will cost 3 to 4 times as much as the test pipe and money is a bit short. What do people think about theirs, smelly?, loud?. I wouldn't want to much more noise as my exhaust is border line droney as it is. Will the cops smell the fuel coming out of my exhaust if they are parked behind me (in Australia, the home of rapidly disappearing rights!). Any Australians running a cat delete, any problems? Do I worry to much?

Mine is smelly and loud, but this here is EEEEMERICA the land of the loud and obnoxious so I do it anyway haha. But yes it is smelly behind the car and a little in the cab as well. I also notice an increase in in drone but I don't mind it much.
Well I can't say about Australia, but I've been running without cats for a while. You get better boost response, and it does get louder, but as far as a smell... I've never noticed a difference in the smell. You will also throw a SES light if it's not tuned for no cats though, just to for-warn you.
Here it is in simplest terms:
- Stock cat, very restrictive power killer.
- 100 cell high Flow cat. Major improvement over stock cat (not far off a test pipe at all), works great, pricey ( I had one)
- Straight test pipe, most power, cheapest, simplest, loudest. yes you will smell the exhaust in stop and go especially.
- Resonated Test pipe, quieter and less drone than a straight test pipe, heavier, a little more money, still great power and spool (what I have now). Still have exhaust smell.
That's it in a nutshell. The resonated test pipe will help keep the car quieter, but does nothing for the smell. For a truly street driven (daily) machine, I'd go for the 100 cell cat. My car is really a dedicated track machine at this point.
As far as the rear O2, just use the anti-fouler trick on it and no problems, no codes, no issues.

Test pipe is loud, kind of smelly, and makes the most power. It's pretty obvious to anybody behind you if you are running catless, but I haven't ever had a cat on my car. I like the sound, I like the smell, and like the power.
Also turns your bumper black. I went from a HFC to a Resonated test pipe. I noticed a large difference in spool and power
But as said above its stinky my exhaust was loud before. So didn't notice that big of a sound difference

Last summer I had a cop pull me over in my Mustang 5.0 and I have catless H-pipe on it and he said he could tell by the smell following me that I was catless. He wasn't an average cop though he was knowledgeable about cars.
I have a high flow cat on my Evo and its does the job, I still feel like I get some of the smell though but I don't mind.

Well I just istalled me tp on my evo 8 three days ago and I must say, people were not kidding when they told me it would by stiiinky.. Lol quite Abit louder but not too loud and IMO sound very nice has a good rumbling effect. I'd say if a cop was behind you and paying attention to sound/smell he would be able to tell..once you let engine warm up it gets better..a little bit xD
Yea, you will notice running a tt over a cat. If you are worried about people being able to notice underneath the car(for emissions maybe?) Just gut the cat. Thats what I used to do on my dsms.
Thanks for all the replies guys, some good info. I might save a bit and go the 100cel cat route. Australia is not the place to mess with the emission control setup on your car. I've heard of $2000 fine PER CYCLINDER for doing so (I think that's for a business that does it). Was worried about the police detecting the test pipe and it seems that it's a good chance if you get a cop with a attitude (read all highway patrol) and a sense of smell. A rally red Evo with a open exhaust is not really flying under the radar! Thanks again.

Remove wing and fly stealth under the radar..

seriously, I love the look of the wing but am seriously considering removal.. Then my silver car will look like a toyota...

On another note.. I really don't smell anything.. my buddy was like damn bro.. running a little rich...lol I was like ehh, straight piped and he said ..that'll do it..
I have a wideband so I know its runnin good..And this... Ive been running a test pipe for a long time, its smelly and loud, not to mention probably worse with the external waste gate dump, but the e85 smells good like corn whiskey and buttered popcorn lol
