Of course it will work, but if you rotate the cam you aren't at 0 anymore. You're retarding both cams half a tooth or advancing. Nothing wrong with retarding of advancing the cams a bit, but you'll NEVER get the system at true 0 if you don't get the adjustable gears.

You'll also need to be 100% sure on your valve to piston clearance when advancing or retarding. A few degrees is safe, but it depends on the cam profile. High lift cams will have less of a "safe zone".

The 3.5 degrees off on the timing marks that you would get by not using correct gears has a pretty big effect on the powerband. I couldn't find the thread that I read about using stock gears from a 4g64, but it absolutely does matter. I read it either in this section or in Evo advanced.

I think the room for error is only a few degrees, nevermind with a high lift cam. You're asking for valve-to-piston contact if you don't make sure you're degreed in correctly. You move those cams you can kill or add to your top end/low end.

Also, keep in mind, that both Mitsu and aftermarket companies have put a lot of thought in how to design those cams. If they recommend you run them at 0... run them at 0.

I read that advancing a little on both gears will give you a better spoolup, but I'd rather do that 1 degree at a time instead of being FORCED to go +3 +3 with the stock gears.

Absolutely agreed. In the push-rod engine world they refer to how the lobes are timed relative to each other as LSA (Lobe separation angle). It's talked about a lot, and basically what makes a good cam for boosted applications over naturally aspirated applications is about a 5-8 degree difference in that angle. And the 7 degrees of change to the LSA that not using correct cam gears would produce can make a profound difference in how the engine behaves under boost.
Why are you so averse to adjustable cam gears in the first place?

Whatever ones you want lol. Most people prefer the 5 bolt to the 3. Although I've had an AEM on my 4g64 for YEARS now and never had an issue. Reason I'm on Evom is because I've started my DOHC swap. I'm tired of breaking the ****ty steel intake manifolds that Mitsu stuck on the SOHC heads. Once the car sees solid mounts, some charge piping, and a bit of clutch chatter... say goodbye

I really like the look of the BLOX gears, you can land em pretty cheap.

Bid on these

The BDL's are great gears, you might be able to land em cheap. Only a day left on them at 135 now.

I already have the Unorthodox Racing cam gears. Does it matter if they are for the 4G63 and not the 4G64?

Your cam gears will work, 4g64 gears won't. Your cams have 2 dowels, 4g64 cams have 1.
