Noob needs help on a evo8

2003 Evo 8 MR
So I just got this car today. I am pretty happy with it but I was wondering what I can do to make more power. It comes with:
*3inch piping to a magnaflow muffler
* hks 272 cams
* 700 cc injectors
*greddy intake
* greddy type rs bov
* wideband/boost defi gauges
*upgraded intercooler and piping by greedy
*hks turbo timer

The previous owner said that it pushed 320whp but he doesnt have the dyno sheet. Do you guys think that I should be making more power with those bolts on? Also, I do not want to touch any of the internal parts of the engine yet so what is the max tq and hp can the stock engine take? Also down the road, I want a twin scroll turbo, what do you guys recommend? How much will it run me?

Im pretty much new to turbo cars since last two cars I have owned have been NA. Sorry for noob questions. Hopefully someone can guide me down the right path. Thank you

is this still on stock viii turbo? a nice and cheap upgrade would be to put a ix turbo in it. the ix flows a tad bit more and is twin scroll.

also is this still on factory internal wastegate? i kno its almost a night and day difference when u get a decent wastegate that hold shut the way its supposed to.

320 is a respectible number for an viii with those mods. i kno they made a little less than the ix's. besides your free'd up exhaust and bigger injectors all that extra power is mainly coming from a tune and those cams.

are you stock upper and lower intercooler piping still? big power gains from replacing those as well. it wouldnt take much to get to the 350hp range. also epends what kinda dyno yu are using tell very and mustangs usually read low.

how much boost are you running?

When you say internals, did you mean the rotating assembly? Honestly, I would swap the cams with some Kelford 272s or GSC S2s.

Also swap out the BOV to an Evo 9 divertor valve. Those GReddys are known to leak during high boost.

Yes this is still on stock evo 8 turbo. How much does the evo9 turbo usually run? If its twin scroll i need a different turbo manifold also is that correct?

My car is running at 25 psi right now. At WOT under full boost is running around 10-10.5 on the wideband which I think is pretty rich. Im not sure what you guys think?

They bolt right up. The stock turbos on evo 8 and evo 9 are same flanges and all. Only need the evo 9 install kit. Also 10-10.5 is pretty rich.

Everyone has different preferences on what to run but i like 11.2-11.5 to keep it a little cooler and safety.

Evo 9 turbos usually run between 250-500 depending on where you find one

I am not very familiar with the USDM Evo models so I didn't know that there was a USDM MR in 2003. I am probably wrong though. The Evo VIII turbo is already a twin scroll turbo design.

Probably I would get a better turbo upgrade than a IX turbo. If your VIII turbo has already had the turbine housing upgraded to a 10.5cm unit then you would see very little gain by swapping to an Evo IX turbo. Not worth the cost and effort IMO.

If I was you I would probably sell some of the lamer parts on your car and save up for a real turbo upgrade such as an EF2, a BBK, or something along those lines. Also, look into getting a switchable e85/91 map setup and running E85 if you can get it. A good tune is your best friend!

As someone else mentioned switch the cams out for something like the GSC S2's, or the Kelfords.

EDIT: What is this thread doing in the advanced sub-forum anyway. It should get moved over to the Newbie forum or some other appropriate venue.

I was thinking the same thing. There is no 2003 Usdm mr, the only year that the mr was produced for the 8s was 2005.

your car isnt an MR, someone prolly put the MR badge there or did a trunk trade for some reason. your stock manifold and turbo is already twin scroll. the evo 9 turbo runs about 500 bucks and you will need an evo9 install kit, you will NOT find it for 200, trust me, i looked. even if you somehow find it for 200, its missing stuff, cracked divider or too much shaft play.

sparky- cams are considered internals, he doesnt want to touch internals, so just leave cams as is.

u have pretty much all the basic external mods, do u have an aftermarket o2 housing? it'll help you gain a few extra power by freeing up the exhaust.

some might suggest you change the bov to a recirc one, oem 9 dv is readily available.

you just got the car, leave it and enjoy it. then figure out what you want the car to be doing and go from there.

HKS272's are plenty good enough for your power goals. They are a good all around compromise, just not good for big hp.

320 sounds about right on a Mustang Dyno. If its the 03 Stock turbo, you might want to go with the 10.5 HS 2005 turbo or go with an IX.

Your already pretty high on the boost, so unless you want to run another fuel, you are going to have to go to a big turbo to make more. Look at E85 if available but you will need bigger injectors

Get a 9 turbo and a retune. Even with those 272s you'll get close to 4s.
10.0-10.5 is rich not a little. A good target with full timing is usually around 11.2s tapering to 10.9s up top for big boost on pump.
