Evo 8 VS 9 Turbo Questions..I searched :)

Did not find much luck searching this questions only a few un answered threads.

If you find a thread let me know

Im looking to upgrade to a 9 turbo on my Evo 8 (has a 10.5 hotside). Can I direct bolt a 9 compressor side to my 8 with the conversion lines and a 9 wastegate?

Sorry for the noob questions just didnt find this answer.

Thanks

The wheels are the same it's the diameter of the plate area around the wheel that's larger on the 9, so that are not interchangeable, this is only for the compressor side.

Yeah, the back side of the compressor housing and the compressor backplate together form what is known as the diffuser. This is different on the VIII turbos vs. the IX turbos. The compressor wheels are the same AFAIK, but the compressor housings and the backing plates are different. Somebody else probably knows if the compressor side of the center housing is machined differently to accept the different backing plate.

As a practical matter you are not going to see much of a power increase going from your VIII/10.5 to a IX turbo. There is a 10+ WHP gain possible if you go from an VIII/9.8 to a IX turbo. But, if you already have the 10.5cm turbine housing on your VIII turbo, then you are not going to see much of a gain at all. Just a lot of work....not much gain.

I would just save up a bit more cash and do a real upgrade turbo. Or, there are other modifications other than an VIII/IX swap that will yield more power per dollar.

But for me I am not shooting for more power via turbo I am replacing my stock turbo for a turbo with less shaft play. Mine is on the line of losing a shaft and sending a wheel shooting into my exhaust haha 125k miles and Im happy with the stock spool speeds for what racing I do. And the 9 is a slight upgrade over the 8.

And pm me more info on the 9 turbo still looking

Yeah in your case instead of sticking with another VIII turbo, the IX turbo does make somewhat more sense.
