The Ultimate Under Drive Pulley/Lightened Pulley Thread

Hey Guys, today I would like to touch on a taboo subject known as the Under-drive Pulley or the Lightened Crank Pulley. There seems to be two separate camps on this mod and neither side appears to be budging.

The Pros.
  1. Real Horse Power to be Gained
  2. Relatively Easy mod
  3. Relatively inexpensive mod
  4. Better Throttle response
  5. Better Drivability

The Cons.
  1. Removes Engine Damper
  2. Possible premature engine failure
  3. Possible premature engine bearing failure
  4. Possible False Knock

I have personally ran one on my 2003 VIII and got immediate and noticeable gains. It felt more torque and more power across the board. The engine reved more freely that is for sure. I ran the Underground Racing Under-drive pulley with shortened belt. It was great.

Now I am thinking about it again. The Lightened wheel but not under-driven. 1 pound Vs over 4 pounds. The company itself has a tag line that states specifically that it will not cause engine harm.

Agency Power has redesigned their Mitsubishi EVO crank pulley for the 4G63 engine. This new pulley is fully CNC machined 6061 aluminum with a full satin silver finish. Laser engraved Agency Power logo, the lightweight crank pulley fits all 03+ EVO VIII and EVO IX The pulley is a direct bolt on using the factory belt. Using the same diameter as stock, the AP pulley weights about 1.1lbs compared to the stock pulley weighing in at 4lbs. The weight savings in rotational mass equates to serious performance increases. Quicker throttle response, improved rev matching, and more for the serious performance driver. The factory harmonic balancer reduces engine noise and vibration in the cabin and deleting this will NOT destroy your motor. The pulley is completely safe as a bolt on giving you between 3-6 horsepower. Tested and used on the Time Attack, Drag, and Street EVO’s, this mod has proven it’s success on many vehicles world wide.

I know this mod won't set the world on fire and I have had good luck with mine on my VIII, well over 50K, just wondering who runs one and how the feel about it.

Thank you

I ran the 4pc unothorodox racing set on a SR20 with a 75hp shot of NOS
When I tore down for a rebuild with only using 20w-50 QS dino blood, my crank and rod bearings had no signs of wear. I only rebuilt since I had a bad encounter with a flood and valve seals were bad.
Apples and oranges but just my experience on the subject.
If I would run one now, why not....

Will never install one on any engine again. Sold my Gruppe lightweight pulley for cheap after my motor threw a rod and bought a Fluidampr for the new, built engine.

There are little to no gains from lightweight pulleys. Lucy to see 1-3hp if that. I wouldn't say there is any better throttle response and definitely no driveability improvements that I have ever noticed.

Lightweight pulleys started in the honda community mostly and its probably the stupidest mod you could ever do to any car, engine damper's are vital to longevity.
