Evo 8 engine oil leak

Hi guys,

Im having quite a bit of a problem...

My evo 8 engine is leaking oil from the engine and i cant find out where the leak is coming from.

I have repacked my transfercase because at first it seemed like it was the small o-ring on top, but it wasnt.

I have also redone my oil pan, and the leak is not coming from there.

If you look under the car from front and back, its located in the far right corner of the engine, coming from up above. And if you are looking from top in the enginebay you cant see nothing..

Ill post some pics of it.

Replaced both the fork seal(?) around the axle and both o-rings.http://puu.sh/svDT

Overview of the leak http://puu.sh/saH3

And here you can see the drips are "hanging" on the boltheads. http://puu.sh/sNd8

Im really frustrated because i really really cant find it, and i hope you guys have some good ideas of what it can come from or how i can search for it.

Thanks in advance

Looks like it may be the rear main seal for the crankshaft.

Save yourself time and misery, stop and learn the difference between engine oil, transmission oil and gear oil.

i had oil build up in the same place on my evo 5 and it was the turbo oil return gasket on the sump leaking, it surprising where the oil gets if your driving the car the wind blows it about.

Best thing i done was get my car on a ramp, clean everything with brake cleaner or some sort of degreaser, dry it all off and run the car and wait to see if anything appears, if it doesnt let the car cool down completely it may show up then when things start to contract.

Its how i found mine so hopefully it will help you.

Ah, i see! i have resealedthe oil return when i resealed the oil pan
yea, i think i'll do that, put it on jackstands and clean it off and run it again.. but everytime i check from where the oil leak is coming from it seems like its coming from up above as i mentioned earlier...

I have the same exact problem on my Evo 8 RS. It comes from above the oil pan on the rear of the engine. I have heard it could be the rear main seal like stated above. Have you figured your problem out yet?

Not sure if you have removed the valve cover at all but after I had cams and 60K maintenance done, I had oil leaking from the valve cover because it was not bolted down to spec. It wasn't gushing out oil but after awhile you can see oil between the engine and firewall area and especially underneath the car. My center underbrace was soaked with oil after a few hundred miles of driving.

Once I made sure the valve cover was sealed and bolted to spec, I haven't had any leaks. Just be sure to use a torque wrench and make sure you don't over torque the valve cover bolts or you can crack the cover easily!! Just an FYI, hopefully that could help.

Nah i havent. hmm, but shouldnt that be easy to see? i mean, you can follow the valvecover all around the head right?

I'll take the top tip and forward it to the shop thanks!

Make sure the oil pan seal is dry at least 2 hours before poring back in the motor.Looks either the oil pan seal wasn't done correctly or rear main seal for sure.

the thing most people do wrong when doing the oil pan is, they tighten down the bolts all the way before the rtv is fully cured and it just smashes it all out and you end up with oil leaks..

what you want to do is, put it on just alittle snug and let it cure to get alittle hard 20min and then torque the bolts down evenly..

ive done it like that and never had a leak and did around 10 pans in total.

also if you have gear oil coming out of your transfercase area i hate to be the person to tell you the bad news but.. if you didnt put the little oring back in there between the tcase and trans housing you have to seperate the tcase from the trans again and put it on or it will forever leak.
