Question Timing Belt Snapped... Need New Engine

Long story short, I was driving on the freeway headed back to sf when the car started making weird noises from the engine bay as if something was rubbing and then there was a loud boom/backfire and the car died. I was in the fast lane and had to pull over next to the divider. Come to find out the timing belt snapped and the engine is done... What now?! I want to keep the car and there have never been any real problems with it thats why I am still kind of in shock. Any recommendations or input is highly appreciated. Looking to keep it under 5k if possible. Not sure if the crank is still good or not. The car is an evo 9 running dual map on 91/e85, stock turbo, boltons, cams, etc.

Just out of curiosity are you using aftermarket cam gears and timing belt or all oem?

hard to say how bad it is without pulling the head. budget wise you would probably be best off trying to source a used 9 longblock to drop in there imo.

I agree with that. You should pull the head to see if any damage was done to the bottom end. Sorry to hear that it happened at all. Really hope it doesn't happen to me or anyone for that matter.

When my crank bolt backed out and jumped timing it pinged all of the exhaust valves. I put a new belt on a found the #3 cylinder was down on pressure. In my case it was a good excuse to have the head done.

Pull your head ( the one on your car) and then go from there. Who did your 60k service...seems odd it snapped.

At freeway speeds, you prolly did get into the pistons pretty good. Check first though before jumping to conclusions. I have done numerous dsms where the timing had snapped cruising through town, all I did eas install a new head, and smooth out the mark the valve made on the pistons. Ive done that for buddies on 3 dsms they all ran great with no issues afterwards.

The head is definitely gonna need some if not all new valve seals and valves. Valve job etc. Pull the head though and check it out.

did you pay for the entire service including tensioners and water pump or just the belt?

Good luck on the rebuild boss but you should take it to where you and the service of possible and talk to them about it because for it to snap so soon is kind of odd and I think it was to tight

If it was to tight then it could cause damage to the journals on the cam.
