Go to home depot and get a 6 inch piece of pipe. While idling, listen to each valve through the valve cover. If you bent a valve, it will have a pronounced "tick" that the others do not have.

The gears probably didn't engage, which would explain the loud grinding noise. Most reverse gears don't have syncros or only have a single one for smoothness, because they aren't meant to be engaged at an rpm too much higher than idle. Definitely didn't do his reverse any favors, though...

I know of a guy who did the same on his 1G DSM. His head & valvetrain was all stock when he accidently reved it up to nearly 10,000! No damage what so ever. I wouldn't reccomend it on a regular basis but your EVO should be strong enough to handle it now & then (when accidents happen)

Last year I was coming home one night in my old 2001 Celica GTS. (redlines at 7800, revlimiter at 8300)
I took off in first onto a divided highway and took it to 8k, tried to do a slip-shift into 2nd, but I was kinda liquored, and didn't get it into gear, but I still slammed on the gas. I looked down, and seen the tachometer sitting on the little peg just past like 9500rpms. Not sure how high I got, but it was pegged for a bit!!

Drove home fine, CEL came on the next day. The diagnoses was 'overrevving' and was a one time coverage under warranty. I sold it off!

I also had this happen in my 91' Talon when it had about 140,000 miles. I was going from 3rd to 4th and hit 2nd by accident, it buried the tach at 9000, not sure how high it actually went but that was high enough. I was at 6500 when I shifted out of 3rd. The car now has about 182,000 miles and gets beat daily by my younger brother and still runs great. The 4G63 is an awesome motor, a long as you keep up on the timing belt, lol.

I'm waiting for all the new threads titled "hey I overrevved too, no problems!" and "who can overrev the furthest? I got 9800rpms!".

WOW, thats all i have to say, ill just take your advice on how it sounded when you did it and not try it myself . Ive had to rebuild a few engines due to over revving. The cause for all three of them was rod bearings. Granted this was a v 8 so there not supposed to rev that high but anyways. The one i did was my own personal truck that a let a person test drive when i was selling it and thought he'd be fine driving it alone, gave me his license and stuff. Took off and about a block down the road put it to the wood and held it for as long as i could hear the truck. The guy didnt buy it and a week later it started to knock. I hope yours is okay, it should be the Evo's internals should be strong enough for accidents like that.

They will all click, as this is a normal sound. However, if a valve has been damaged, it will be a different, far more pronounced "tick". In other words, it will be audibly different from the others. Since you do not have a problem, all will appear to click.
