Hit 9460rpms on a downshift!!!

I wanted to shift into 4th, but I accidently threw it in 2nd. I caught it before the gear fully engaged and immediately pushed the clutch in. I checked the peak rpm on my AFC and it showed 9460rpm's!!!! The car runs fine and still feels like it has the same power. I wasn't on the gas at all since I was downshifting. Believe me that I am kicking myself for the mistake. I am just curious to how I can check things out to make sure nothing was damaged? It still sounds and idles the same too.

Consider yourself lucky! Eventhough you were not on the gas, you could have done some severe damage to your engine by over revving. You could have easily bent some valves...

I'd think that if there was damage done, you would be able to tell by listening to the engine and driving the car.

Any stock engine internals/valve train that can rev to 9000+ is definatly of the highest quality. Makes you wonder why so many people bag on the quality of the car. Congrats man, you were lucky.

Whew. I know how you feel. I did that twice in one week! Never again did it happen, I'm much more careful.

I do not think that you hurt anything this time, but I do not know that revving the car up that high would be very good in the long run. That is hell on your valve springs, when they open that much more quickly then they were designed to they will often float and bind then bounce back down on the rocker or camshaft again. This is not a very good way to promote lingetivity in the valve train, especially if you are running higher lift aftermarket cams. I just installed Works valve springs and retainers this weekend and will be putting in HKS 272/272 cams tomorrow night. Works did not recommend going over 8500 rpm even with their heavier seat pressure springs and the Titanium retainers that weigh half of what the originals do. I am sure this one time was probably ok, but I do not agree with nastea about revving to 9000 rmp and not worrying about it.

The stock 4G63 is mechanically safe to 8000 RPM...dunno about 9000+, though...

Yes..you are VERY lucky!

Just to put things in perspective regarding the situation, last night, a friend of mine that has a civic Type R motor in a 98(EK) hatch accidentally made the same exact mistake that you did, going from 3rd to second instead of 4th. With his CTR motor, he was revving till 8900 rpms. When he misshifted, he saw the rpms, get past 10K.

He wasnt as lucky as you made out. His car died right there, and would not even crank over. Bent valves, and who knows what else for now.

Wow that must have sounded awesome for a split second (joking about it only because it sounds like your car is fine).

a friend over reved his SR20DET to 9000+... car ran fine for a few weeks then he lost all compression in 2 cylinders car is running on stock boost.... So i'd assume you did damage but as to the severity No one can tell you without breaking the motor open...
