That turbine wheel is interesting. The now powerstroke diesel has one.

Interesting design, but looks like air flow falls off quite a bit after peak torque... but man that torque comes on super quick!

The presentation states twin scroll ( which we know spools faster ) and the fact the flow is re-directed before getting to the hot side wheel. I read that as a bottleneck at high shaft speed and air flow..or we could just go bigger right LOL

Does anyone know if the axial flow technology is taken from jet turbine? Those would have a completely different turbine operation. Transient response would not necessarily be a large factor as engine speed would be not increasing or decreasing rapidly or very frequently. Entirely different power curve I would think

The other presentations are on the VNT which is older and definitely not new, ball bearing which almost everyone including the newer diesel turbos are going to reduce transient ( actually more of a concern in diesels with a limited rev range ) response, and finally cover the Ecoboost application ( turbo diesel for Ford )

Garrett has been talking about this technology for quite some time, it will be awesome to really see it happen in the future

I have wondered why mixed flow or axial turbines weren't used in turbochargers for the past couple years. Cool to see it possibly being used in the future.

That's pretty impressive to see 3.0L V6 like torque from a 1.6L at 1500 RPM. I wonder how this will scale to turbos we care about though.

Size might be an issue with this new design

So yeah... 6 years later. Porsche 919 does well with it:
