rev limiter - to bounce or not?

Since I've still got balance shafts, I've kept the rev limit set fairly low at 7800 rpm, but I find myself hitting the limiter in 1st and 2nd gear fairly frequently. No problem, or better to raise the rev limit a bit higher?

Hey mrfred,

Any reason you opted to keep the balance shafts with the engine build? Was it to keep the car feeling smoother?

Also, FWIW, a few of my Evo friends (with balance shafts) have raised their rev limits to around 8200 RPM's.

Do you have aftermarket springs and retainers? If so, I don't see any reason not to up the rev limit a little bit. Did you ask Aaron his thoughts?

i kept the bs's because i like a smooth feeling motor. i do have springs for the cams. yeah 8k seems reasonable. haven't asked aaron yet but will likely this week.

Yeah 8000/8200 are a reasonable RPM, especially if you keep hitting the 7800 RPM rev limit.

Though, I have been having a hard time keeping my rev's under 8800

I have stock motor except for m2 cams. I've revved it to 8800 a couple times with no issue. Don't plan to continue though haha

I'm a bit confused. If your hitting the limiter why not just shift earlier instead of hitting it? Or are you trying to open the motor up more for a longer power range?

It revs through the powerband in a split second in first gear, and its still making good power at the rev limit, so there is no feedback in the powerband that says its time to shift. For the most part, its either watch the tach or bounce, and watching the tach isn't something I want to do at WOT. 2nd gear is pretty much the same story except it doesn't happen quite as fast.

i dont know if its any different with these cars, but with my hondas in the past,
i would run the motor till power would start falling off on the top end and then set the rev limiter there.

Hey mrfred....

I know a bunch of folks who autox Evos and some do run them off the rev limiter. I have done it in the past but in my car for some reason if it bangs on the limiter for more than 1-2 seconds it sets a code and check engine light.

If I was you since you have valve springs, set the limiter to 8200 and learn to lift as it is going to 7900. Basically it is revving so fast you'll just catch it at the 8200 mark.

Is your car actually making power the whole way to 7800rpm? If not, then there is no reason to rev that high.

i raised mine to 8606 1000 higher than stock. Ti springs retainers s2 cams. Basically I never try to go above 8, and the 600 is for those moments that it happens. and in autocross.. it does.

If he is reaching the rev limiter that fast, he is making power up to and past the limiter. Reset the limiter higher and see what your tables look like, and go from there.

I would think 8000 RPM is probably safe, seeing that the factory limit is set to 7500. There's gotta be some redundancy built into those parts, however, 8600 with the balance shafts sounds incredibly risky to me.
I suggest a shift light set up to come on like 800 RPM short of redline to give you some time to react in first and second.

Yeah, I'm going to see how well 8000 rpm works for me. As much as I hate the idea of a shift light on my dash, it does make sense.
